I nearly squeed in church...
Aug. 8th, 2010 02:51 pmWe had a guest speaker in church today, and during his sermon, he compared our Methodist Hymnal to a TARDIS...
I very well may have been the only one in the congregation who got it...

Date: 2010-08-08 07:57 pm (UTC)There was a girl in my Magic class who had the sound of the TARDIS landing as her ring tone for messages. Well, let's just say she got a text in class and everybody just turned in that direction not with the usual mixture of accusation and amusement but with expectation. Somehow we all waited (in vain) for the TARDIS to materialise.

Date: 2010-08-09 02:32 am (UTC)It sounds about right--it takes you to just about any time and place (at least in Christian history/tradition), it translates the original languages for you, and it certainly is bigger on the inside!
(Now I'm imagining a Universal Hymnal out there whose chameleon circuit kicks in to blend with the needs or preferences of the congregation/denomination, depending on what church it's in!)

He actually did not go into a lot of detail in his comparison-- you actually expanded on it a bit, as he didn't mention the translation part and the "bigger on the inside" part. It would have been lost on most of the congregation. But I thought about it, after he'd quickly passed on to other points.
(Oh, and I love your idea of a Universal hymnal. As you describe it, it sounds sort of "Lewis-ian", if you know what I mean?

Date: 2010-08-09 04:12 pm (UTC)Maybe the universal hymnal will be in heaven? That would be pretty neat, though (even with all of eternity to get through it) the thing would be MASSIVE.

Date: 2010-08-09 05:02 pm (UTC)I will say that so long as I can remember, a main focus of the Methodist church has been global outreach. But it's not been so much about evangelism as about embracing the Christian traditions of other parts of the world.
