Today was rather unexpected. I was undecided this morning about going to church-- but before I had a chance to make up my mind, our son called. He wanted to bring his new girlfriend and her little girl over to visit and to meet us, and he was going to bring some meat for the grill, and wanted me to make some salad and sides. But they had to do it early, because the girlfriend had to get back to her town by a certain time. So church was out.

So the DH and I got in high gear with the cleaning-- though with the floor in the state it's in, it's hard to tell when it's clean-- and I whipped up a Jello poke cake (cake from a mix, poke holes in, pour Jello over, and top with whipped cream), made some mac 'n' cheese, deviled eggs and salad.

Our son's girlfriend D. seems very nice. To be honest, she seems a cut above his previous relationships-- she's intelligent and seems more emotionally stable than his ex, at any rate. And her 10-year-old daughter is adorable! She's quite a fan of the LotR movies, so I gave her one of my copies of The Hobbit to read. She's had piano lessons, and spent most of her afternoon plunking away at the piano. She's also a very polite little thing. I do hope that this relationship will last.

We had a pleasant meal around 3ish-- I guess it was a late lunch or early supper: small steaks, hot dogs, hamburgers and grilled chicken, along with the aforementioned sides. We actually ate outside at our picnic table, which was fun! My son cleaned up the dishes, and they left shortly afterwards, leaving us to recover. We were really tired-- we've not been much used to company in the last few years, but agreed it was fun for a change.

Poor Sugar had to be cooped up in our room the whole time, as she hates company, so she was glad to get out of there, get her own supper and go outside. For once, she didn't argue about it.

After they left we watched some TV-- didn't bother with supper, but just got a few leftovers to nibble, being mostly still stuffed to the gills from the cook-out.

Still, I'd had some plans for this afternoon. I really wanted to get some more MEFA reviews done-- I've got most of my hidden ones finalized, so I need to do some more if I am going to get my goal! I'm slow this year!

It sounds like you had a wonderful day, despite not getting some of the stuff done. I think those unexpected family days are the best!

I love those unexpected family visits, especially if a BBQ is involved. It's one of the things I miss the most about not living at home.

What a tiring, but pleasant, change of pace. It sounds like your son's new GF is a keeper.

I'm glad you had a lovely weekend. :) And admit it, you're planning to give the girl a copy of LotR the next time they visit! :) *g*

Erm, Sugar is a cat, a dog...? *unsure*

You deserved to have a good day for a change! That meal sounds yummy.

Eep, MEFA... I'm sooooo far behind in reviewing compared to last year. I need to get on the ball with that.
