Got to go to church today for the first time in weeks; it was a lovely service, today is "Human Relations Sunday" for United Methodists. And we sang one of my favorite hymns...

Immortal, invisible, God only wise,
in light inaccessible hid from our eyes,
most blessed, most glorious, the Ancient of Days,
almighty, victorious, thy great name we praise.

Unresting, unhasting, and silent as light,
nor wanting, nor wasting, thou rulest in might;
thy justice like mountains high soaring above
thy clouds which are fountains of goodness and love.

To all, life thou givest, to both great and small;
in all life thou livest, the true life of all;
we blossom and flourish as leaves on the tree,
and wither and perish, but naught changeth thee.

Thou reignest in glory; thou dwellest in light;
thine angels adore thee, all veiling their sight;
all laud we would render: O help us to see
'tis only the splendor of light hideth thee.

In other churchy news, apparently I am now on the Adult Ministries Committee. I must have volunteered, I guess, at some point in time...

Thanks for reposting that hymn--I haven't sung it in ages but that let me do so (at least mentally) right now!

In my church today, we sang one of my favorites: "Crown Him with Many Crowns": somehow the words match the melody to create a truly otherwordly experience (the only other hymn that pulls this off as well that comes to mind at the moment is "O Sacred Head Now Wounded").

I hope (given that you don't remember volunteering) that you're still interested and willing to help out on that committee! My family recently ran into a situation in which suddenly one of us was on the "Funeral Luncheon Committee" when no one had ever said any such thing.

Also, it was a good day for hymns at my church, too. We sang an Ambrose of Milan song. :-)

And then I had to go home early because of snow...

You're bringing back memories of my Presbyterian upbringing. Beautiful hymn!

I know very few hymns, having been to church perhaps 5 times ever, and singing mainly 'Lord of the Dance' in Primary school. In fact I made an apparent faux pas the other day when I said I quite like Jerusalem, with its slightly bizarre lyrics and was informed it is in fact the national anthem (of England, though obviously everyone sings 'God Save the Queen' because it is the British one.)

Oh, and similarly to you place on the committee, it turns out that I am a Student Ambassador. I knew I was the rep for Russian but don't remember applying/being volunteered as an SA. I suspect my tutor...

AAAAAHHHHH! That is one of my absolute favorite hymns too! It is the first hymn I sing when I'm shoveling (yes, I sing while shoveling - doesn't everyone?) and I've already told the family I want it sung at my funeral service. I love the words and the beautiful tune (Welsh, if I remember correctly). Our recent hymnal "updated" the words - yuk - but when it comes up I sing THESE words.
