Well, nasty weather is headed my way...
Jan. 31st, 2011 07:15 pmI just had two phone calls.
The first one was from the Payne County Emergency Center to tell me that the storm we've been expecting is on the way, and to stay home and off the roads.
The second one was from the DH, who is at work in Tulsa, to tell that-- as we had figured-- he is unlikely to be home before Wednesday. The nursing home will put staff up there. Of course he wanted to make sure I was OK. And I am right now, because so far nothings happening.
But they expect it to. So if I vanish off the face of the earth sometime in the next 24 hours, it's the weather and the power and cable being out.
OTOH, hope springs eternal, and I will keep my fingers crossed that that won't happen. And I am in for a very long and boring 60 or so hours all by myself.

Date: 2011-02-01 01:27 am (UTC)You know all the emergency-preparedness drill, but I'll suggest some anyway:
Charge all the phones, Ipads, batteries, etc., you have.
Fill some jugs with water in case the pipes freeze.
Keep the water running to prevent pipes freezing.
Have firewood inside in case the heat goes out.
Have candles and matches available so you can read LOTR if the power goes out.
... and to heat tea to drink while you read LOTR.
... and to see to write about "Where were the Hobbits when the lights went out?" Oh, wait, wasn't that the joke Merry told in Moria?
*more warm hugs and protective prayers*

Date: 2011-02-01 02:24 am (UTC)Already have two gallons of water ready. And the DH emailed me to remind me to drip the water.
Don't need firewood--our fireplace is gas. And we have an old-fashioned gas floor furnace, so will have some heat. Although our space heaters won't work, so I will probably have to sleep in the living room if it gets too cold in the bedroom.
Have a few candles and some matches and a lighter. But I know from experience that won't really be enough light to read by at night. But I should get enough daylight to read by during the day.
With a gas stove I should be all right for heating up food and drink, though I will have to light the burners, as the electronic ignition won't work. Also if and when the fridge/freezer go out, I'll just put my perishables on the front porch.
Mostly I'll be lonesome. But hopefully I can do a bit of writing in longhand. It certainly will be better than it was post-Katrina!

Date: 2011-02-01 01:33 am (UTC)I hope we both escape the worst of this! No power outages please! (that's what REALLY worries me, I'm not really prepared for not having heat -- no generator, no fireplace, no space heater that runs on batteries or anything...
*throws a blanket your way*

Date: 2011-02-01 02:35 pm (UTC)How is it out there? Did you get much ice? When I stepped out the door to walk to the train station this morning around 7:45, the snow just started. Within 15 minutes, it was coming down at a steady clip. When the Red Line (subway) went over the Longfellow Bridge (the subway has to emerge to cross the Charles River), the usual view of the Boston skyline was whited out!
I'm glad I wore my Bean boots today. :^)

Date: 2011-02-01 04:06 pm (UTC)*Squeeeeeeees!* I grew up in Tuscola and attended the UIUC for undergrad! :^D I still get back now and then to visit my mother. Now pardon me while I wax poetic about Papa Del's, Illinois tomatoes and Illini super-sweet corn. :^)
The storm that will arrive inn CU later today is supposed to smack into New England tomorrow. It's this 2 storms on top of one another that will be, in a word, icky.

Date: 2011-02-01 04:09 pm (UTC)I've camped out at my parents' house (less likely to lose power) just in case for hte next few days...Plus, they have a treadmill, so I can continue (I'm training for a half-marathon) training.

Date: 2011-02-01 04:18 pm (UTC)C-U is a great community. Not too big, but big enough.
Oh, you should message me if you ever come to the area!
Definitely! I'll likely come out this May or June to visit my mother so will drop you a line. :^D

Oooh, which one? I used to run. No longer but I'm familiar with the running scene because of several friends who were competitive runners here in the Boston area.

Date: 2011-02-01 02:29 am (UTC)I've learned the hard way: I can do without lights. I can do without running water. I can do without a lot of things.
But being without my internet will make me nuts. I can survive it.
But I won't like it.

I know, right? I confess I am addicted. But lack of the 'Net is survivable. Hope you still have power!
Btw, loved Making the Best of It. Shall give it a proper review by and by.

Date: 2011-02-01 04:23 pm (UTC)It's whiteout outside, snow blowing every which a-way, but the weatherman says it's not new snow falling! It's the wind blowing around the snow that's already there.

Date: 2011-02-01 02:22 am (UTC)I'm going to stop looking at it! We're now in for 14+ inches. *headdesk*
My hubby considered staying at his workplace, because they're working on an Army contract that's due Wednesday... but then he decided they'd push tonight to get it finished before the bad weather hits.
And here at home we have a generator. And I hit the grocery store and we have food. And our neighbor has a tractor with a blade on it so we can dig out. So long as the Internet stays on, I should be good to go.
Hopefully your power will stay on! *crossing fingers for you*

Date: 2011-02-01 02:31 am (UTC)Me too.
Well, of course, the DH knew he'd probably be staying. Nursing homes are a lot like hospitals. Once you get there in a bad weather situation, there you stay until someone else can get there to take over for you.
(((hugs)))
Hope your power/internet stay on too!

Date: 2011-02-01 02:45 pm (UTC)I don't have to be at work till noon today (and I don't leave till 8 p.m.) so I'm still in my dressing gown, contemplating whether or not to go out and shovel or just wait and do it before I head for the T.
I like snow. I just like a lot less of it all at once.

Date: 2011-02-01 04:13 pm (UTC)I hear ya. It's also the accumulation of snow with little melting in between. Boston's already narrow streets are even made more narrow with the piles of snow. And parking! OMG. Makes me glad we didn't buy a townhouse in Southie (with no offstreet parking).
