I enjoyed this and I loved your nod to "A Secret Gate". I adore Elanor's name for Pippin from his grandchildren. This is a lovely little story. Merry's idea of a punishment was very fitting but I did like that Pippin found it a bit strict. I'm guessing that he would have gone easier on the child if it had been his call. Very in character for both.
Pippin, I think, was surprised Merry punished him at all, since he and Merry had not been punished by Saradoc. But, as Merry pointed out, their mishap truly was accidental since they had permission to handle the spyglass. So Theo did at least deserve some punishment. And at least Merry didn't make him write an essay, LOL!
