Help me out with a project:

It's interesting that there is very little LotR fanfic on the internet prior to PJ's movies coming out in December 2001, although I am sure that there are a good many in 'zines that I have never seen.

Most of the stories have been written after the movies came out, and even those whose authors were concerned with mostly the book-verse version of events, show some sorts of influences from the movies—even if the influence was a negative one (deliberately setting out to contradict the movie-verse version).

But the explosion of LotR fic due to the movies also meant lots of fic was also being written concerning the characters and events of other times than those of the War of the Ring, including The Silmarillion and The Hobbit. Since these events were never included in the films they were, pretty much of necessity, book-verse based stories.

That means that there are a lot of stories out there about The Hobbit that are not going to be influenced by the movies! I think it would be useful to start collecting up links to such stories now, so that when there is an influx of new blood into the fandom due to PJ's version of The Hobbit, we can point people wanting stories about Bilbo or Thorin or Kili or Beorn or the attack on Dol Goldur in the direction of those stories!

Of course, this will not help those who want stories about Tauriel, but I am sure there will be plenty of those afterwards.

I realize there are quite a few of my own on here, but that's because it was easiest for me to find the links to those, LOL! Please help me out by leaving comments with links to any such stories you know of that I've missed out on. And there were a number of stories I would like to have included, but either have lost the links or the links I had were broken.

If you know of any stories set during the time frame of The Hobbit, or of stories concerning Bilbo's life before that time, or the Dwarves, or Smaug, or even of the relevant Elves if it relates to The Hobbit (e.g. how the Mirkwood Elves reacted to Smaug's arrival or how Elrond knew to prepare for the Dwarves) or the attack by the White Council on Dol Guldur, etc. please comment here.

I have started comment subject lines for the different categories, so all you have to do is to reply to that particular thread.

Once I've collected enough links, I will post them so that people can find these stories. It will be especially helpful to people who may want to read some fanfic before the first movie comes out in 2012.

I think there's one problem here--post-2001 Hobbit and Silmarilion fic wasn't influenced by the Hobbit movie obviously. But I think it is a mistake to assume that it's not influenced by the LotR Movies. I think it could be interesting to make a list of these stories from between 2001 and 2011 and see how the differed from those after, but they're not pure Tolkein fanfic.

I do understand that. However, it will of necessity involve more book-verse elements than purely LOTR movie-verse would have or that purely movie-verse TH fic will in the future.

It is at least a chance to get our own fanon on TH out there before PJ's fanon takes over completely. And, as I said, will be useful to point newcomers to in a year or so.
