Guess what we had for supper?

The DH went fishing today at a pond near the local high school, and brought home two lovely catfish-- close to 2 pounds at least. Catfish fried in cracker meal, hush puppies, salad and mashed potatoes...

You can't get much fresher than "just caught"! *beams proudly at her gatherer/hunter*

Yum. One question? What are hush puppies? In this Country they are a make of shoe! Catfish slippers anyone!

The only thing is: hush puppies are round NOT "finger shaped"!

Amen! LOL I remember when Red Lobster had hush puppies instead of the cheddar biscuits, theirs were oblong. I always thought that was odd... but they still tasted good! (As do those biscuits...)

More trivia connecting shoes and the yummy fried goodness that is a hush puppy: the shoe company chose that name because they make comfortable shoes that keep your "dogs" from barking. Back in the 1950s when the company was founded, "my dogs are barking" was slang for saying your feet hurt (some people around here still say that). Apparently the company founder was eating in the South and heard the story behind hush puppies, and an iconic shoe company brand was born.

This New England Yankee loves those Southern-fried delicacies. Hush puppies (round; very round) are a signature appetizer at my "local," Redd's in Rozzie. Chef Charlie Redd is a native of North Carolina, so there are a number of appies and entrees with a Southern spin. He serves a "bacon ragout" as a dip with the hush puppies: it's a lovely blend of onions, scallions and bacon. To die for!

Btw, the recipe!fic is coming right along!

I have just woken up and taken another look at your reply. It has just given me a plot bunny free to a good home but I warn you it is slightly icky! Well really icky!

As hush puppies are made of corn which I assume is maize and not British corn, I would set this in Gondor. How about finger shaped hush puppies made to celebrate Sauron losing his finger? Frodo, would find the idea too repulsive but it is about right for Lotr rings and Halloween fans!

Off to clean my mind of the image.

Sounds fishy to me!

Man, that menu sounds familiar, though my mom always insisted you had to have fried potatoes and corn bread with fish.

I adore hush puppies! Reminds me of meals my granny used to cook.
