Guess what we had for supper?
The DH went fishing today at a pond near the local high school, and brought home two lovely catfish-- close to 2 pounds at least. Catfish fried in cracker meal, hush puppies, salad and mashed potatoes...
You can't get much fresher than "just caught"! *beams proudly at her gatherer/hunter*

Date: 2011-10-27 10:39 am (UTC)Hush puppies are little balls of fried cornbread, and are traditionally served with fish in the South. (Southern states in the US) The story about how they got the name is that in the old days Southern men on fishing and hunting trips would make the little balls of cornbread, and when their hound dogs would whine and whimper for a handout, they'd toss them some of the bread and tell them "hush, puppy".
Ah-- here's a link: http://whatscookingamerica.net/Bread/Hushpuppies.htm
The only thing is: hush puppies are round NOT "finger shaped"!
Anyway, they were around a lot longer than the shoe brand, LOL!

Date: 2011-10-27 12:18 pm (UTC)Amen! LOL I remember when Red Lobster had hush puppies instead of the cheddar biscuits, theirs were oblong. I always thought that was odd... but they still tasted good! (As do those biscuits...)
More trivia connecting shoes and the yummy fried goodness that is a hush puppy: the shoe company chose that name because they make comfortable shoes that keep your "dogs" from barking. Back in the 1950s when the company was founded, "my dogs are barking" was slang for saying your feet hurt (some people around here still say that). Apparently the company founder was eating in the South and heard the story behind hush puppies, and an iconic shoe company brand was born.

Date: 2011-10-27 04:48 pm (UTC)I made a BLT salad the other day--just lettuce and tomatoes and then bacon lightly caramelized in the oven with just a touch of brown sugar, homemade sourdough croutons and a sprinkle of grated cheddar. I didn't care much for the dressing in the magazine's recipe, so I made up my own-- light mayo whisked with a little apple juice and a smidge of apple cider.
SQUEE! Recipe!fic! It doesn't take much to make ME happy!

Date: 2011-10-28 06:39 am (UTC)As hush puppies are made of corn which I assume is maize and not British corn, I would set this in Gondor. How about finger shaped hush puppies made to celebrate Sauron losing his finger? Frodo, would find the idea too repulsive but it is about right for Lotr rings and Halloween fans!
Off to clean my mind of the image.
