A while back, [livejournal.com profile] azalaisdep wrote a little drabble in [livejournal.com profile] tolkien_weekly; I commented with the notion that Bilbo's version of the "Tra-la-la-lally" song in TH was because he did not speak or understand any Elven languages at the time, so he simply made up words to suit what he thought he heard. (That's been my own "headcanon" for a long time!)

My comment gave her a bunny, and now she's written a lovely little ficlet about it:

How does that saying go, before there was canon, there was The Hobbit? Something like that. And reconciling the Hobbit to canon can be difficult at best. I love your idea about where that song came from! It makes canon make so much more sense LOL.. or shall I say, tra-la-la-lally!
