I am finally caught up!

I am finally caught up with the quilt blocks for the fis_bom "There and Back Again" Block of the Month for The Hobbit!

Pics behind the cut:

	The cloaks in Bilbo's front hall This did not quite come out as well as I'd hoped. I ended up having to applique instead of paper piece on this one! But I did have fun adding Gandalf's hat and Thorin's tassel to it.
	The view from Bag End's front door. Not too pleased with the piecing, but I like how the view came out. I had fun adding the trees and flowers, and the quote. Sorry this one is a bit blurry.
	Sting I'm pleased with this one. I have some embellishment I want to add, but will get to that later.
	The bridge to Rivendell I think this is my best one so far. I want to add the Elves' song on here later.

Those are all just wonderful. My personal favorites are Gandalf and Sting and the view from Bag End. See, they are all so good that I couldn't just select one favorite. : )

Thanks! I've never tried this sort of quilting before, and never tried to make a whole quilt, so this is a whole new experience for me.

Wow, these are great! My favourites are the view from Bag End and the bridge to Rivendell (although that reminds me very much of what the place looked like where they filmed some of the barrel scenes for The Hobbit!!!!).

I had great fun embellishing the view from Bag End, adding appliques of trees and flowers to the view. I wasn't too happy with my piecing of the door frame, though.

The Rivendell scene I think came out pretty good-- there were fewer pieces, plus I am finally getting used to the method.

My favorite is the view from Bag End, inspite being blurry. I also have the feeling that it was the most difficult to make. Or is it just my wrong impression...?
I love the Bridge to Rivendell too, especially because of the blue and the stars, but the View remains my favorite... :)

Well, of the ones I made the way I was supposed to, it was the hardest, especially the parts around the door frame. But it was fun to embellish.

The bridge scene was one of the easier ones to do!

The one that was actually hardest for me was the cloaks-- I finally had to give up on piecing it and ended up doing applique, which was much easier to do.

That one was the most fun to embellish! I loved adding the flowers and trees to the original plan.

The cloaks were hard! I finally ended up doing them a different way than how I was supposed to-- applique instead of piecing.

I loved the fabrics I found for the bridge to Rivendell! I already had the star material, but was glad to find the "water" fabric too.

Oooh, lovely! What a fantastic quilt this will be when you put them all together (if that's what the master plan is). I'm with Ellynn, I like the view from Bag End especially. I'd love to see a clearer photo of that one.

Yes, that's the plan! I believe the mods of the comm said there will be 13 blocks in all, and they will show us a layout when they are all done.

I may try to make a better pic of that one and then post it.

The block for the cloaks is really hard. It's kind of unfortunate that it comes up as block 2, because I know at that point I didn't have the skill to make it look as good as I wanted it to. I couldn't get 16 points in one row to line up. Heck, I'm having trouble getting two points to line up sometimes, and my Sting suffers from that. In the road block, I'm not happy how the floor pieces lined up either. I just don't have the trick yet to handling all those little fiddly bits.

I like the way you're using embellishments and applique. The background on the road just begs for some more landscape. And the last block, the bridge, is quite abstract. The trees and rocks in the river really add a lot there.

For that block, it took me a long time to come up with fabrics that I thought had the right balance of contrast to differentiate the hills/cliffs from the bridge, and still contrast against the water, especially when it's supposed to be night. I like your stars. I plan on embroidering a thin crescent moon on mine, in the same silver thread as Thorin's tassel. I know the book says the moon had not yet risen when they crossed, but there is a quarter moon a few days later when Elrond is looking for moon-letters. Since there's no hobbit and dwarf party crossing in the actual block, I feel I can put a moon in.

I could not do block 2 in the paper piecing. Everything was so small and twiddly. But then someone else posted a pic where they had appliqued the cloaks, so I decided to do them that way. I saw later at least one other person also did that, so I didn't feel too bad.

The fabric I'm using for embellishment is some of the landscape type fabrics you can sometimes find. I bought fat quarters of three or four of those. The flowers and trees are from a Thomas Kinkaide print, and the grass and rocks and pine trees came from a print of a field of horses! I have to fussy cut them of course, but they just add a nice touch, I think.

I am planning to embroider the Sting inscription in Tengwar on block 4. The inscription is movie-verse, of course.
