Happy birthday, baylorsr!
Here is a birthday drabble for you:


GANDALF OBSERVES BOROMIR

He has been observing them. I have watched his confusion and bemusement begin to give way to helpless affection. They intrigue him, they tug at his heartstrings.

He is beginning to understand their indomitable spirits, which are fueled by the fierce love they have for one another. He is amused by and admiring of, their good humor in the face of troubles that easily fell beings twice their size. I can see his fascination for them transforming itself into love, and I hope, beyond all hope, that it will be enough to drown out the insidious whispers of the Ring.

Thank you. I am quite sure Gandalf would have been aware of the Ring's blandishments, and known whom It was targetting. But of course he could not interfere.

(One thing I disliked in the film were the heavy handed hints from Gandalf and Galadriel about treachery and so forth. I think both of them would have hoped Boromir could resist, and would not have said anything to undermine his struggle.)

Yes, I think that Boromir really did love his hobbits :)

I am quite sure that he did! I think that it was his love for them that enabled him to cast off the Ring madness at the end, and to give his life for Merry and Pippin.

What a beautiful use of 'voice.' It is absolutely faultless. One notices it only after the message though, which is as it should be. This drabble starts out warming our hearts and ends up chilling them. Outstanding writing.
