A busy day!

dreamflowerToday we had an adventure! The DH and I had a little business errand in the northern part of the state, and decided to make a day of it.
We left early in the morning and headed off. Just north of Tulsa, we found a neat little town called Claremore. They had a dairy there that makes their own cheeses , and we stopped in and bought some cheese. Then we found a yarn shop where I bought some really nice ribbonlike gold metallic yarn and a beautiful hank of self-striping sock weight and some knitting magazines. Next to that was a nursery where we picked up some tomato plants of a variety I was not familiar with, "Super Sioux" and a trumpet vine! When we lived in Mississippi we had a beautiful trumpet vine that totally covered the entrance to our front yard, which we lost during Hurrican Katrina, so we have high hopes for this one.
We ate lunch at the Claremore Braum's-- which is almost identical to the one where I work here in Cushing except the bathroom's nicer!
Then we headed on up to Grove, where the DH dealt with our business quickly, and then we decided to explore some of the awesome antique/junk stores they have around there. A number of things caught my eye, but I passed on almost everything because I couldn't think of where I'd put them. But then we stopped at one last store and I found a very special book.
When I was nine, I got The Betty Crocker New Cookbook for Boys and Girls (Unlike the person who wrote that blog, I did get to make the "Enchanted Castle Cake".)
I still have that cookbook. Several of the recipes are still the recipes I use today, though they may have had some tweaking by me over the decades. HOWEVER not long after we moved here, there was a disaster: the metal binding had corroded and the front and back cover came off! No luck in finding any way to fix it, so I carefully and sadly put a rubber band around it and placed it on the top shelf of my cookbook bookshelf.
I found a copy of the exact same book at one of the secondhand stores! It truly is from back then, and not the reproduction: the original printing was in 1957, and had a white cover, not a yellow one like mine, and that is the one that was reproduced a few years back. It's in excellent condition-- a tiny grease spot on the front cover about the size of my pinkie fingernail. The inside is immaculate-- I'm guessing that the kid who'd owned it must not have liked to cook much. I was SO happy! I'll still keep my poor old volume, but I will be able to use the new one when I cook now.
We got home and had leftovers for supper, and I watched DWTS finale! No spoiler to say that the winner deserved it-- because all three finalists would have deserved to win! This season has been just brilliant!

Date: 2012-05-23 09:13 am (UTC)As to spoilers for DWTS, I was planning on watching the finale tonight while I worked but I made the mistake of opening my Yahoo email and Yahoo had listed the winner on the 'What's happening now' part of my email, so now, I am not looking forward to watching. I hate when they do that! You are right though, any of them would have deserved to win it.

I think you will enjoy the finale anyhow, dear-- there was some really great dancing, including by folks who were kicked off earlier-- I especially loved Sherri's routine, LOL! And of course the remaining three had to dance one last time!
