Shirebound, this one's for you!
Jun. 24th, 2012 10:01 pmThis is my set of Childcraft...

And this is my set of Richard's Topical Encyclopedia, and also a two-volume set of classic children's stories.

Here are four of my childhood books. I posted about the cookbook not long ago. The three remaining books were given to me by teachers: Little Lost Bobo was a gift from my first grade teacher, and it's an old first grade reader. The story is about a fawn who gets lost and spends most of the book searching for his mother. The orange book was a gift from my third grade teacher, and is a biography of Juliet Lowe (who founded the American Girl Scouts). I loved that book and read it to pieces. My fourth grade teacher gave me the one with no cover. It's an old third grade reader from the early 30s, and would have been thrown away because it was in such sorry shape. I loved it because of one particular story about a little girl who had a magic house that she had to take care of.

These are three little knick-knacks I've had for years. The little blue elephant belonged to my maternal grandmother, and is the only thing I have of hers. The tiny pottery vase I got in Appalachicola, FL when I was about 12. It cost me all of a quarter. The little cup was purchased in Pueblo, NM when I was about 9 and we were on a family vacation. It cost a dollar because it was filled with pinyon nuts.

This is a yellow silk shawl my daddy brought home to my mother after he did a tour of duty in Saudi Arabia in the early 50s. And the baby dress and baby shoes, well, those were mine-- hard to believe I was ever that tiny!

The next two pics are of my Official Monkee Fan Club Packet, still completely intact. The first one shows it with the autograph of Davy Jones that the DH got for me during their reunion tour.

And the next one shows the group photo on the front of the autograph.

Here's the packet all closed back up. And those boxes? Those are old reel-to-reel tapes of Monkee episodes and slumber parties! This was BEFORE cassettes, y'all! That tape recorder was a monster and weighed a ton! I would have my friends over for a slumber party, we'd tape the show, and then tape ourselves giggling and talking about the Monkees until the tape would run out, LOL! I don't know why I hang on to them-- I don't have any way to play them, and I'm not sure they'd even still work after all this time.

Thanks,

Date: 2012-06-25 01:18 pm (UTC)We have a lot of knick-knacks, some from me, some from the DH. One of the things we have from his side of the family is this big glass-doored bookcase, and that's were we keep most of those things. And then there are my unicorns, most of which have their own cabinet.
I've been collecting unicorns since about 1972; one of these days I will have to do a post about those.

Date: 2012-06-25 02:47 pm (UTC)I was such a Monkees fangirl, LOL!
You, know, that's a thought. I know they can convert old VHS tapes-- I have a ton of those we should do that with-- family vacations and SCA events and stuff from when our son was little...

Date: 2012-06-28 04:16 am (UTC)I bet those old tapes are still in good shape with the data; I've heard somewhere that older methods of recording things actually last better than the newer ones.
