<LotR 30 Day Meme in one day:
Day 1: Tell us about it. How did you discover LOTR?
In 1967, I was a sophomore in high school. We were in homeroom, and it was Scholastic Book Day (if any of you remember those); we'd gotten the books we'd ordered. I'd only ordered one, I don't even recall it, but I finished it in no time. The girl at the next desk to mine had ordered about 3 books, and one of them was The Hobbit. I'd seen a picture of Peter Tork reading it in Tiger Beat Magazine, and I asked her if I could borrow it. She didn't mind, so I did, and changed my life forever. I took it home and finished it overnight. The next day I went to the school library to find more books by the same author, and took home FotR and TT. RotK was checked out. By the end of the following week though, I had managed to read all three of them, and started all over again.
Day 2: Your favorite movie? and book?
Fellowship is my favorite on both counts, mainly because, well, The Shire!
Day 3: Is there any of the films adaptations that have made you angry because they've ignored important parts of the book?
Mainly the gutting of Merry's and Pippin's backstories, which made it seem like they only went with Frodo by accident! I was a bit angry too, at Faramir's characterization at first.
Day 4: Who is your least and your most favorite female character and why?
Most favorite is a minor character, who gets a mention, but no lines at the Party: Esmeralda, Merry's mother.
Least favorite: Lobelia (even if she did repent at the last, I think it was too little, too late.)
Day 5: Who is your least and your most favorite male character and why?
Most favorite: Frodo, though the other hobbits are really so close it's nearly a tie.
Least favorite: Lotho. He was an appalling bully, who betrayed the Shire for his own greed.
Day 6: Where would you live in Middle Earth?
Crickhollow.
Day 7: Favorite poetry?
A toss-up, I think, between Bilbo's lovely song, "I Sit Beside the Fire and Think" and Sam's song in Cirith Ungol, "In Western Lands". But I love all the poetry and songs.
Day 8: What is your favorite people (hobbits, orcs, elves, ents, men, dwarves, etc)?
HOBBITS!!!!! ♥ ♥ ♥
Day 9: Favorite song from the LOTR OST?
"Into the West"
Day 10: Lothlorién or Rivendell?
Rivendell; Lothlorien has way too much climbing for me!
Day 11: What character would you say you are most like? And what character you wish you were most like?
I'm most like Bilbo BEFORE his adventure; I love my home and my creature comforts, and curling up with a good book after a great meal.
I wish I was like Pippin, with his unquenchable optimism and cheer and his large heart.
Day 12: First, Second, Third Era or (even) fourth era and why?
Third Age, because--HOBBITS!
Day 13: Least favorite movie? And book?
Of the movies, Two Towers, because it was very disjointed and chaotic to me, and there was character assassination.
Of the books? No "least favorite" there--it's all one story.
Day 14: Team Mordor or Team “all free peoples of Middle Earth”?
What a silly question.
Day 15: Who would be your best friends at Middle Earth? (Three only).
NO. I refuse to only have three. Bilbo, Frodo, Sam, Merry, Pippin and Gandalf.
Day 16: Favorite hobbit?
Whichever one I'm writing fic about at the time (At this point in time that's Bilbo). Mostly I like all of them fairly equally, and what I really love about LotR is their friendship and interactions with one another.
Day 17: Are you excited about “The Hobbit” movie or scared it won’t do the book justice?
Of course it won't do the book justice. But that doesn't make me scared. I'll just be watching someone elses' fanfic. Only it will be a fanfic that is beautifully filmed and expensive and legal.
Day 18: Ever dressed up as one of LOTR characters? Tell us about it.
Not as a character per se, but I did make a generic "hobbit lass" costume for the Scot Moot I went to in 2007. There's a pale green chemise, and a dark green bodice with a tapestry front panel, and a dark green calf length skirt. I made knitted hobbit feet to wear with it, but they didn't hold up too well. Last year, I redesigned the feet and knitted a new pair to wear to the opening night of TH:AUJ. Those came out much better. I wore them at Halloween too, and will probably wear the outfit to TH:DOS this year.
Day 20: If you had to meet one member of the cast, who would it be?
I'd be pleased to meet any of them, but who I'd really like to meet is PJ. I'd like to ask him some questions about some of the decisions he made (some which I like and others that I don't) and I wonder if he were filming it now if there's anything he'd change.
Day 21: Out of all the characters that died, if you could bring one back, who would it be?
It's a toss-up: Boromir or Theoden.
Day 22: Scariest scene
Oh, definitely the scene in which Frodo has just escaped Shelob's Lair, and thinks he's safe, and all the time the audience realizes she's tracking him and then all of a sudden--thwack! She stings him! I cringe all through that sequence every time.
Day 23: Any part of the books/movies that makes you cry?
Oh yes! I cried for happy the very first time the Shire came into view in FOTR, because it was so perfect. And I cried sad buckets over Boromir.
And in ROTK, I cried several times, both sad and happy (especially when the people of Minas Tirit bowed to all the hobbits.) And, thing is, I'm NOT a movie crier normally. Usually I only tear up a little if anything. But not with LOTR!!
Day 24: Any particular scene you wished would have been put in the movie but it wasn’t?
Several. I very much wish there could have been SOME sort of scene explaining Merry's and Pippin's love for Frodo. But there were a few others I'd have liked to see.
Day 25: For you what was the worst part of the Ring-Bearer journey to destroy the one ring?
Cirith Ungol, definitely.
Day 26: If you could spend one day of your life in Middle Earth, where would you go? What would you do? To whom would you speak to?
I'd love to have tea at Bag End with Bilbo and Frodo, and maybe his cousins and Sam would be visiting.
Day 27: Would you rather own Narya, Nenya or Vilya?
Vilya, because, healing.
Day 28: Apart from LOTR, what’s your favorite book?
I'm not going to say The Hobbit, because to me, it's basically the prologue to LotR. I believe that I'd say it's C.S. Lewis' Space Trilogy: Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength
Day 29: Did you enjoy the Lord Of The Rings Soundtrack?
OH YES!! HOWARD SHORE FOREVER!!
Day 30: What effect has The Lord Of The Rings made on your life and how much does it mean to you?
It profoundly changed my life forever. Because of it, I became a Christian. Because of it, I met my husband of 37 years. Because of it I have been influenced to value loyalty and love and persistent determination. Because of it, I have made many good friends all over the world, a few of whom I've actually been privileged to meet in RL. Because of it, I have experienced some of the most creatively satisfying times of my life.
How much does it mean? I can't even measure it.
