A "Smith" drabble

dreamflowerHaving recently re-read JRRT's "Smith of Wootton Major" I was inspired to write some drabbles, based on the observations of some of those who interacted with the character in the story.
Here's the first one:
NELL
He was always a kind lad. When he gave me that silver penny at the Twenty-four Feast, I knew I had never seen kinder eyes, though he was nine and I only six. From then on, I watched him and followed him when I could.
When the other boys would tease me, he would say, “Leave her be”, and such was the light in him, the other boys listened, not mocking him for defending a mere girl.
Today we wed. The Smith with the star on his brow becomes my husband. But he belongs already to something higher and greater.
