fic_inspiration had a challenge for a "Five Things That Never Happened To..." and I chose Bilbo. Since they are all AU, some of them are a tad disturbing.
I love a good AU, and I confess a little seasoning of darkness in my AU makes me cackle and rub my hands together. All of these are really good, simple but packing a punch. Number two in particular chills my blood. (Although when I really think about it, the last one should frighten me more. Poor Frodo gone to his reward, and Bilbo all set to totter out into the wild. He wouldn't have got very far before the Ring was taken from him, poor old hobbit.) And number three is so sad: This would be his last trip to Buckland, for it no longer held anything of value to him. Ouch. (But it's a nice, dark, tasty AU sort of ouch.)
Well, except for the first one, they certainly had darkness to them. I actually had a couple of other, less dark scenarios, but only five could make the cut. (And actually one of them, involving Bilbo marrying Lobelia--*shudder*--could have been darker than any of the others...)
Of course, the Fellowship would have still gone with him, but I can't imagine it would have turned out anywhere near the same. I don't suppose even if he survived Caradhras or Moria that he could have fought off Boromir...
