One lesson for each year I've been alive:
LIFE LESSONS
1. Be nice to people. Kindness rules.
2. Good manners don’t cost anything, and are very useful in all sorts of situations.
3. Home is good. There is no place like it.
4. “You can do anything for 15 minutes at a time!” (FlyLady)
5. If you can’t say anything nice, just think a little longer, and something will come to you. Eventually.
6. Life is not fair. But even if it’s not, we should try our best to make it that way.
7. No matter how many years since you have heard them, old TV theme songs and old commercial jingles make the most pernicious earworms. (“Brylcreme! a little dab’ll do ya…)
8. Getting dressed and making the bed first thing in the morning really does make a difference in how productive your day is.
9. Always make sure the handle is back up, after you flush the toilet.
10. Never take modern conveniences for granted. You can end up doing without them at any moment.
11. When you are told to “Evacuate!” you probably should.
12. Communications are vital. Being able to keep in touch with people is just as important as food and shelter.
13. If something seems permanent and unchanging, it probably is not. Don’t take it for granted that something or someone will always be there. Especially if you live in a hurricane zone.
14. A snoring dog or a purring cat is the best sedative.
15. Creativity never truly dries up. But sometimes it won’t flow in the channels you prefer.
16. Plot bunnies breed like…bunnies.
17. Sometimes family are the only people who do *not* understand.
18. And sometimes they are the only ones who *do*…
19. Sleep is over-rated.
20. For instant ego-gratification, cook someone--or several someones--a meal. If they don’t volunteer the information, ask “how is it?”
21. Do not put anything on to boil, and then decide to go online “for just a minute to check on something”. Very unwise.
22. Acrylic paint does not wash out of clothing once it dries.
23. Other people’s children seem to grow up faster than your own.
24. Hot glue is your friend.
25. If you put the phone down and leave it at the other end of the house, it will ring.
26. Spam is like kudzu. Pernicious.
27. One size does not fit all. Especially panty-hose.
28. Too much bleach is not a Good Thing.
29. Choose your carpet to match your dog hair.
30. There really and truly are “guy things” that girls won’t ever understand…
31. And there really and truly are “girl things” that guys won’t ever understand…
32. But they are not always the things you think they are.
33. There are only a few circumstances in which going up to perfect strangers and admiring the trim on their clothes or asking them what the fabric is, is not considered strange behavior. Choose your context wisely.
34. Sometimes it is a good thing to quit while you are ahead.
35. It is sad but true that all the best foods are bad for you.
36. Metal folding chairs are a tool of the devil.
37. Snuggling is a *very* Good Thing.
38. It never hurts to listen.
39. However bad circumstances are, “this too will pass” is true, even if it is a cliché.
40. Sometimes your fingers work faster than your brain. Thats’ teh reasno their are tpyos.
41. Spellcheckers are evil. They fix what you don’t want fixed, and they miss the obvious.
42. There are worse things than a broken fingernail. But if you break one off at the quick, you will not remember that.
43. No one can push your buttons like your mother.
44. Always remember that if circumstances do not intervene, you too, will one day be old.
45. Money is not the most important thing. But there are times when it seems that way.
46. There is no such thing as “too many books”, but there is such a thing as “not enough bookshelves”.
47. Letters are wonderful. Twenty-six little symbols that have changed the world. They are beautiful all by themselves or combined into words. Making letters is an awesome task.
