I am finally catching up on my fic reading and I am so glad to finally get a chance at this! I am looking forward to more! Is this going to be the story where Hyacinth...?

I felt so sorry for Merry not being able to comfort Frodo, and I was a bit angry at Saradoc - he knew very well that he was punishing Frodo as well as Merry by doing that. I loved Merry's protectiveness and stubborness!

Well, Saradoc was hoping Merry would give him an out, and apologize to Amethyst, but you know how stubborn Merry can be. And I actually wanted a parallel here between the punishment Saradoc gave Merry here and the punishment that Pippin will recieve several years later in "The Dare".

I've only read the first two chapters of this story, but I just wanted to say that I've been really wanting to read a story set about the time of Lalia's death. It is such an intriguing little bit of hobbit history that doesn't seem to get mentioned often. I'm looking forward to reading the rest.

Well, I hope that you like my take on what happened. It's an interesting bit of intrigue and could be interpreted many ways; the scant information in Letter #214 is tantalizing. Another really great interpretation is Lindelea's "Pearl of Great Price":

What a lovely story! Full of Pippin-angst and naughty Merry, lol. Poor Pip! Poor Frodo too for that matter, not being able to spend as much time as he want with his cousins. Merry has rather prevented that himself though, stubborn and full of pride that he is.

I love how you describe Pippin's thoughts in this - he loves his cousins so much. Being at a funeral at that young age is scary and overwhelming.

Yes, Pippin-angst and Pippin suffering, and there will be plenty of Merry and Frodo angst too, before it's over with.

That stubborn Brandybuck pride ( and Saradoc is fooling himself thinking it all comes from the Took side, LOL! You don't see him backing down either, do you?)

Pippin is a very loving and compassionate child, and a funeral, and death, are not things he's ever really had to think about before, poor baby.
