Great weekend
Jun. 1st, 2014 10:09 pmFriday night the DH and I watched Saving Mr. Banks. I really enjoyed it; Emma Thompson was amazing in it!
Saturday was a quiet day; the DH did some yard work, I tidied the house and did some laundry and after lunch we pretended to watch TV and nap. Then Saturday evening there was a free rodeo at the local rodeo arena. There was even a free meal. It was sponsored by some churches and was also an evangelistic event, so you knew going in listening to a sermon was the "price". Supper was a choice of hot dog or hamburger, small bag of chips and a canned soft drink or bottled water.
We had not been to a rodeo in years and years, and it was a lot of fun; the best part (I always think) is the barrel racing, but they also had bronco riding, several roping events, and bull riding. For the kids they had "mutton busting" (sheep riding, which was hilarious!) and a calf scramble (about a hundred kids trying to chase five calves and get a ribbon off its tail. Winners got $20 and every kid taking part got $1. They also had a junior and a peewee class for the barrel racing. The highlight was a little girl in the peewee class--she looked to be about six or seven--riding a pinto. She approached the first barrel and her horse balked. It would NOT go. She sat there and kicked and bounced, and the pinto just set its hooves. then tried to turn and go the other way. She pulled on the reins and finally it meandered around the barrel. It went on to the next two barrels and didn't balk, but it didn't rush any either. She was so cute and stubborn! The only bad thing was: sitting on bleachers for four hours! We are getting way too old for that. Our backs and backsides ached and we were so stiff that we were hardly able to walk back to the car!
I took some pics with my phone, but I'm not sure they came out good enough to post.
Today I did have to work, but it was only a short shift from 10AM to 2PM; I rested this afternoon. After supper the DH went down to the pond at the high school to fish. I listened to music and played around with trying out some Zentangle which I've been interested experimenting with for a while. The DH got home with a mess of crappie and blue gill, which he cleaned and we put in the freezer. Sometime this week we'll have fish for supper.

They are very popular here in OK; even small towns like this have their own rodeo arenas, and there are even high school rodeo teams at some schools. One of my regular customers used to be a well-known barrel racer and still raises the horses for that event.

Date: 2014-06-02 02:24 pm (UTC)We have to sit on a lot of bleacher seats for my daughter's monthly taekwondo tournaments, so we invested in a pair of portable stadium chair backs... makes a HUGE difference in how much we enjoy a tournament. (You can google "stadium chair backs" or "bleacher chair backs" and see all kinds of varieties).

If we go to any other events at that arena, we'll probably do what we saw most of the folks our age do: take our own folding chairs and put them on the ground in front of the bleachers behind the safety fence. But your idea sounds like something it would be good to have!

We've done that, too, before these stadium chair backs became available (we discovered them via our daughter's high school, which sells a version in the school colors with the school's eagle mascot screenprinted on them). I prefer them over lawn chairs because with them, you can still sit in the "good spots" at venues and not off to the side or behind a fence where the view usually isn't as good.

Date: 2014-06-02 03:37 pm (UTC)Well, I think I'd prefer to sacrifice the view, and spare our poor old knees (and the DH's hip) the climb up the steps! And at this particular arena the fence is not terribly obstructive. Only the top rail is fixed in place; the lower rails are nothing more than widely space plastic rope.
It's really a very nice venue for its purpose, but not dreadfully accessible for older people or the handicapped.

Date: 2014-06-03 02:09 am (UTC)OTOH, I wouldn't be surprised if a certain Ranger could do most of those events--remember "Hidalgo"?
Really, if you ever get a chance, they are a lot of fun to watch!
