Garden picspam!
Jun. 17th, 2016 03:46 pmWell, it's been a while since I have made a garden post, so I thought I'd make one today. Lots of pics behind the cut.
I harvested everything out of my trough bed yesterday except for some of the onions. I got radishes, onions, the last of the lettuce, and one carrot! Then I planted some more seeds. Cherry tomatoes (one red, one yellow) at one end and in the middle, and New Zealand spinach at the other end. I've never grown that before, but have heard that it does better in hot weather than regular spinach.

This bed is our Kentucky Wonder pole beans. The center support is an old outdoor umbrella frame. The pole beans have begun to bloom, but are not bearing quite yet.

At the foreground of the following picture is an old set of shelves that the previous owner left in our shed. We just put it on its side and filled with soil. I planted six tomatoes: four Early Girl, and two Brandywine. Both the Brandywines died. So today I planted seed for two Roma tomatoes to replace them.
In the background is a bed for Morning Glories. The pole holds a birdhouse (currently occupied by a pair of sparrows and their offspring). The vines are growing well, but we've had no blooms yet.
Also in the background against the side of the garage are my pots of herbs. They don't get much sun in the early morning, but get plenty by midday and by afternoon. I have mint, thyme, parsley, rosemary, two pots of chives, and sage. Sometime this weekend I will be putting my basil out.

The bed with the flamingo has three tomato plants (one Early Girl and two Beefsteak), a volunteer broccoli, some onions and an eggplant and a sweet pepper.
The bed in the foreground has Greencrop bush beans and some onions. I harvested some onions, the rest of the radishes and spinach. I planted the seeds for two cherry tomato plants, one yellow and one red.

This bed contains cucumbers (which have begun to bloom), and three types of bush beans (Blue Lake, Yellow Wax and Greencrop) which are already bearing. there are also some onions planted around the edges.

This is a new bed, against the fence to the east side of the back yard. We've planted it with sweet potato slips. We grew the slips ourselves from just a couple of grocery store sweet potatoes.

I missed getting pics of a couple of other beds; one is planted with Chinese Okra, and the other has a zucchini and some asparagus beans (AKA yard-long beans).
I'm really pleased with this next one. You may recall we remodeled our bathroom last year. The DH saved the sink from our old vanity. He put it up on top of a galvanized trash can and secured it in the corner where the garage meets the fence, near the back door. The taps don't work, but the outdoor faucet is only a few feet away, so I can use the hose there. It's a great spot in which to clean my veggies. When the trash can fills up with water, we use it to water the garden (though we still use the hose to water with).

Now, speaking of veggies, here is my harvest from yesterday:
Here's my carrot:

Almost all my veggies:

I didn't get a picture of the beans; the DH brought in a nice little mess of mostly yellow wax beans, plus a few of the Greencrop. It wasn't quite enough for a full meal. But that's all right because yesterday was the Cushing Farmer's Market, so I picked up a few more to go with them, along with some lovely fingerling potatoes, a couple of cukes, some gorgeous blackberries and several green tomatoes. (The DH has a hankering for green tomato pie and also fried green tomatoes.)
I cooked the green beans and potatoes in vegetable broth, with a bit of chopped garden onion. We also had pork chops and dressing, and big salads with the last of the lettuce, the carrot, garden onion and radishes. I made blackberry crisp for dessert, which we had with vanilla-bean ice cream from Braums.
It was quite a satisfying meal.

Date: 2016-06-17 05:52 pm (UTC)Mmmm, I adore rosemary and sage. Every time I'm near some I have to rub them between my fingers and smell them.

Date: 2016-06-17 11:46 pm (UTC)The painted tub is a galvanized cattle trough. I painted it about ten years ago, the first summer we lived here. The large white square used to have a quotation about gardens, but it faded. I keep meaning to re-do it.

Date: 2016-06-18 05:48 am (UTC)I'm not a gardener but I love seeing other peoples and I really like your idea's for repurposing old bits of furniture. The sink is a fantastic idea, especially as you recycle the used water too.
I want to come and eat at your house. :)

Date: 2016-06-18 11:33 pm (UTC)It's fun to post about my garden, and it helps to look at past posts to see how it's changed over the years.
