Saturday night
May. 13th, 2006 09:46 pmSo, this evening, the DH suggested we go out to McAllister's for supper, which I didn't expect, since we are going out tomorrow for Mother's Day with my mom. I just thought we'd eat, and then pop in the grocery store for milk on the way home. Instead, while we were eating, he asked if I maybe wanted to drive over to the mall.
We haven't *been* to the mall since Katrina, so I agreed. A new bookstore has opened, a Border's Express--it's little, and doesn't have the selection of a Barnes & Noble, or even of a Books-a-Million, but nevertheless, I found a new calligraphy book, a new craft book, and a new Threads magazine. And the DH bought me a beautiful unicorn night light--it's crystal and gold, really pretty!
Then we stopped at Winn Dixie on the way home, and in addition to milk I got this really cute eeny-weeny little watermelon--just right for two people!! I love watermelon, but we hardly ever buy it anymore, because the two of us can't eat a whole one--but this is just perfect!
But the upshot is that we were gone all evening, so I didn't get to work on a certain hobbity project or on fic tonight.
Only eleven more days until the Barnes & Nobles re-opens.

Date: 2006-05-14 02:21 pm (UTC)The books were exciting, because both of them were "remainders"--that is, the publisher was trying to get rid of them. Each of them was originally in the $25 to $30 dollar range, yet I paid only $4.99 for the craft one and $5.99 for the calligraphy one! And because the store was new, they were offering free membership discounts last night, which gave me another 25% off! The magazine ended up costing more than one of the books!

Date: 2006-05-14 02:29 pm (UTC)I've been doing calligraphy since 1989. I practice whenever the fit takes me--not as often now as I used to before I took up writing fanfic, but still quite a lot. It's one of the things I will take along if I am going to be stuck in a waiting room, for example, or will sit around with it on my lap and practice when watching TV. It's loads of fun--the "letter arts" are incredibly interesting.
There are a lot of online calligraphy supply dealers, and while some things can be expensive, others can be found for quite a bargain. A beginner can always start out with a couple of cheap felt-tips, a pad of graph paper, and a good book--I recommend David Harris' The Art of Calligraphy for beginners. Then graduate to cartridge pens, dip pens and cutting your own quill pens as the years go by. Once you try it and find out how fun it is, you shouldn't really need any nudging, IMHO!
I'm working on a very nice hobbity calligraphy project right now...it goes with a new story I'm co-writing with someone...all I can say about it right now!

Date: 2006-05-15 07:21 pm (UTC)I'm fascinated by this art. I somehow cannot imagine that - with practice - even my wobbly hand will become something beautiful.
A hobbit project?
that's how I came up with the idea in the first place. In my German story are so many diary entries and letters - it would be so nice to have them written out - even with changing handwriting. From a child's wobbly hand to the practiced writing of a tween.

Date: 2006-05-14 02:38 pm (UTC)There are a lot of regional chain supermarkets. "Winn-Dixie" used to be affiliated with another chain called "Kwik-Chek", and "Piggly-Wiggly" was also a popular chain, although those are more rare than they used to be. (I kid you not!) In the town I used to live in in Florida as a child the main supermarket is *still* the Piggly-Wiggly!
