This weekend
Aug. 28th, 2006 09:46 amI had a really nice weekend! I am now the herald for our local Barony in our SCA group!!
Our little one day free event was held at the new home of our Baron/Baroness. It's an old house, and they've done a *lot* of work on it, and it's really cool. They've decorated the front room to look like a 500 year old pub. It's located well inland, but in spite of that the property lost a lot of trees so they call it "Broken Oaks", LOL! The event was called "NUTS to Katrina", and was very laid back--there was a small tourney, with only four fighters, a games competition, and several classes on things like weaving and so forth. Mostly I spent time talking to friends I had not seen in a while.
I hope to post pictures in a few days.
Yesterday was resting up, although we did go out for lunch at Subway, got gas, and went to Barnes & Noble. I bought a pantograph kit in the remaindered book section, and ordered two books that they don't carry.
Today I have a ton of laundry--including the Baronial Herald's Tabard--which is really, really *hot*. *wheew!*
One more note: as the new herald reading out the names of the winners of competitions, the SCA name of the one who won the Live Weapons (that is, throwing spears, knives and axes at a target) was "Drogo".
I really had to bite my tongue to keep from saying something about Frodo's father!!

Date: 2006-08-28 03:11 pm (UTC)You do realize that now you can make as many bad puns as you want ;) as long as you're wearing heraldic garb...
At least that's how we do it way up north!

It's heaps of fun, and there are branches all over the world. Our local branch is the Barony of Seleone. I've been in since, oh, about 1989. We are in Anno Societatus XLI--in other words the SCA has been around for 41 years!

Date: 2006-08-28 04:27 pm (UTC)I hope you do! Loads of really great fun--it's a lot different than live gaming groups: more emphasis on the history. But not quite so concerned with accuracy all the time as some of the re-enactment groups. SCA is sort of in the middle. And it's the granddaddy of all those groups.

And congratulations on your herald-ness!
