Date: 2008-02-28 04:53 am (UTC)It was certainly a delight to open my post and discover you have transcribed dear Aunt Dora's etiquette lessons for future generations to read and enjoy.
While I did find them rather stuffy and restrictive, I suspect it is merely the adventurous Took side of our lineage rearing its head. The more sedate Baggins and Boffin side thinks they'll be a valuable teaching tool. And how could I hold my head up proudly if I did not welcome and applaud the arrival of a new book to the Bag End library?
Yours, with regard,
Bilbo Baggins, Esq.

Date: 2008-02-29 05:01 am (UTC)I was very glad to collaborate with your cousin Dora. While she is a very proper hobbit indeed, I find that she is also very observant and sharp, and she has a Generous Heart. And while her opinions of Adventures are a bit Old-Fashioned, most of her ideas on Child-Rearing and other Important Matters are very sound.
However, I have found that she has had a Rather Unfortunate Effect upon my Capitalization!
Yours most sincerely,

For goodness' sake!
If you had to publish notes on proper etiquette, did it have to be Dora's?

Date: 2008-02-29 05:06 am (UTC)I thank you for your opinion upon my collaboration with your esteemed cousin Dora. I am sure she will be Very Interested in hearing of your Views.
I am afraid that I am already engaged for next Wednesday afternoon, and will be unable to join you for tea. I find, in fact, that my engagement calendar is quite full, and I do not seem to have any available time to pay a call upon you in the foreseeable future.
As sincerely yours,

Date: 2008-02-28 05:54 am (UTC)It has been brought to my attention that you have moved since I last visited you. I was thinking about that visit just the other evening and it led me to wonder if there were any of those all-you-can-eat places near your new home. Sadly, there still have not been any such establishments that have opened in the Shire. Pippin and I have suggested this quaint tradition to several of the local merchants but alas, none of them are of a mind to change their policies. That is the trouble with the Shire! There are no risk-takers among our neighbors! Frodo pointed out that such a business would be unlikely to turn a profit owing to the fact that most hobbits can eat far more than anyone can afford to offer. Although I find his reasoning very sound, I still long for an evening out among folks that know how to offer a proper banquet. It is at those times that I miss what you call the southern hospitality of Barnhill's.
If you locate a new all-you-can-eat place there in your new township, Pippin and I will be happy to drop by and visit it with you and Mr. Dreamflower. Just let us know. Oh, don't let Frodo know that I wrote to you about this. He would not be at all happy.
Warmest Regards,
Meriadoc Brandybuck
PS Pippin wants me to tell you to say hello to the dogs for him!

Date: 2008-02-29 05:19 am (UTC)Your visit to me with your cousins and Sam is one of my fondest and dearest memories. I often think of it, and would love to see all of you again.
It is quite a shame that you cannot entice any hobbits of the Shire to set up an all-you-can-eat buffet there. I do understand Frodo's concerns on the matter, and I'm afraid he may have a point. Perhaps, though, you could interest someplace else to do so--Bree, perhaps, or even the King's new capital at Annuminas. Men might not be quite so reluctant, or so familiar with hobbit eating habits.
As for here in my new town, there is one such place. It is a smaller establishement than Barnhill's, with a smaller range of offerings on the buffet, but it also has a menu with some unusual delicacies, such as fried green beans. It is called The Steer Inn, so as you may suppose, it's specialty is steak and beef. There is also a small place specializing in what is called "Chinese food", which has a buffet--there are usually several fine mushroom dishes on offer there!
If you could all see your way to paying another visit, I am sure that we would be glad to show you both of these fine restaurants! There are also some other places here I would love to take you--including a place that serves a type of meat called "buffalo", and another one that specializes in hundreds of flavors of the fizzy drinks Pippin likes--not just Pepsi or Coke!
I would not be surprised, Merry, if Frodo did not already guess that you have written to me--he seems to know you (and Pippin) pretty well, and though you pulled the wool over his eyes once, I would guess that he'd be much more careful from then on! However, since you asked, I will say nothing.
Please give Pippin my love, and tell him I will pass his message on to Sugar and Sissy! He is the only other person they have ever liked.
Your friend,
Dreamflower

Date: 2008-02-29 05:22 am (UTC)Your Grace, I thank you for the kind words about my tales; I am very glad to know they meet with your approval. I'm very fond of the hobbits, and of you and your friends, and it makes me quite happy to write those chronicles which did not make their way into the Red Book.
I am glad that the Queen was understanding about your little outing with young Frodo Gamgee. I'm sure that she saw it was just another evidence of your kind and noble heart!
Your obedient servant,

Date: 2008-02-28 11:54 am (UTC)It has been some time since you and the other hobbits set off for Rohan and ultimately dear King Elessar for judgment. I hope that all has gone well. While it hurts my heart to see such evil acts come from hobbits, I know Strider well and I know that he will be just and fair, both for the good of the Kingdom and for the hobbits themselves.
Please send a message as soon as you can.
Yours,
Frodo Baggins

Date: 2008-02-29 05:27 am (UTC)I do apologize for being so remiss in letting you know what is happening with your cousins Fredegar,Berilac and Mosco, and with your other friends who travelled with them. Rest assured that I will soon be sending you further word. In the meanwhile, Freddy and Beri send their best wishes, and Jolly asks you to remember him to Sam and Rose.
It might help if you would inform Merry that he must answer his letter from Eomer King as quickly as possible! The others are being delayed in their journey until that word arrives.
Yours,

Date: 2008-02-28 01:03 pm (UTC)I would take this opportunity to commend you on your way with the hobbits. It is good to know there are other people out there looking after them when the likes of me are too busy to keep track of them.
Fondly yours

I never was one for lots of pretty words and such, so I am sending a bouquet from our garden for you. I thought it might remind you that spring is coming. I thought with a name like yours you would appreciate flowers.
Yours very truly,
