We were among the lucky ones. We weren't "slabbed" (nothing left of the home except the slab), like some of the people we knew. Our house only flooded a little bit-- we weren't driven into the attic, like other people we knew. Our roof was intact, and so were we.

But we lost a way of life, and it will never be the same.

If you are new to my flist, you may never have seen My Hurricane Katrina Diary, or the pictures I posted when we once again had power and computer service.Katrina Pictures here and Here.

There are many people still trying to pull their lives together on the Coast.

Don't let them be forgotten.

I've been thinking about you a lot, and how you and hubby had to start all over.

*tight, proud hugs*

The ficlet I wrote that day helped me stay calm for all of you. I can't believe it's been four years already.

*hugs you very tightly* I know well about anniversaries and how they make you think and stumble a bit and how it makes you contemplate the loss of a life and the beginning of a new one.

I am not on my computer so I'm not adept at opening new windows and tabs, but if you look in Last Ship I wrote a ficlet in memory of Katrina back in 2005 called "Sun" about hope and rebuilding. <3 <3 <3

It's terrible to think of all the damage that was done by that storm, and how its effects are still felt four years later. I watched a program today about some folks rebuilding a home in New Orleans. I didn't catch the first part of the program, so I don't know who paid for it all, but it was a whole crew who built this beautiful big house for a little lady from New Orleans who lost everything she had. It was amazing how hard they worked on that place, and the day after they finished it, Hurricane Gustav came through there with 145 mph winds, and barely did any damage to the new house.

That must have been terrifying. We had the slates blown off our roof when I was in my teens and I've been scared of high winds ever since. We are very lucky with the climate here in the UK too compared with other countries.

Every year now I hold my breath when a hurricane builds in the Gulf; I think everyone does, and those who were affected by Katrina more than anyone. I'm glad you've been able to rebuild your life but saddened always that you and all those others had to.

Wow, I know you vividly recall how devastating and unreal it all was for you, because I've been thinking about the anniversary of Ike coming up on the 13th or so. It's almost like you're in another world, isn't it? And though it's hopeless to wish for such a thing, I do wish that no one would have to go through such a thing ever again.

I'm so glad you're in a hurricane-less area now. As for us, I think we'll luck out down here and few storms will come into the Gulf this year. It's an El Nino season, which means they tend to turn out toward the East coast.
