I woke up in the wee hours after a really dismal dream: the DH and I, for some reason, were back in Mississippi attempting to drive along I-10, only it was all torn up and surrounded by dead trees like after Katrina. Except worse--the dead trees were perfectly huge, and portions of the interstate were no better than a dirt road full of potholes...

Woke up to hear the wind just howling-- the preliminary to this winter storm they've been warning us of. *sigh*

Oh well! It's Christmas Eve! I do work today, but I should be home by 4, and I doubt if we are as busy as we normally would be on Christmas Eve, due to the weather. I'm really looking forward to tomorrow!

When I was finally able to communicate with my flist after our power and services were restored post-Katrina, I was surprised to discover that several of my flist had come up with [livejournal.com profile] hobbit_aid, a community for the express purpose of providing some personal support to me, [livejournal.com profile] coneygoil, and [livejournal.com profile] marigoldg's mother, who was staying with me during and after the storm.

I wrote the following story as a "thank you", and I suppose as a catharsis. It is reposted in its entirety, complete with "thank yous". I will never forget how much it meant to me, and those who took part will always hold a special place in my heart, no matter what.

We were among the lucky ones. We weren't "slabbed" (nothing left of the home except the slab), like some of the people we knew. Our house only flooded a little bit-- we weren't driven into the attic, like other people we knew. Our roof was intact, and so were we.

But we lost a way of life, and it will never be the same.

If you are new to my flist, you may never have seen My Hurricane Katrina Diary, or the pictures I posted when we once again had power and computer service.Katrina Pictures here and Here.

There are many people still trying to pull their lives together on the Coast.

Don't let them be forgotten.

The DH talked to his sister in Bay St. Louis today, and told him some disturbing news:

What would you say about a business that can slash the services provided, and then more than double the price? And expect the customers to bite their tongues and pay?

It's called insurance.

We got the notice for our insurance renewal. Read more... )
