A very fun and exciting day!
Jul. 31st, 2010 10:16 pmThis weekend the DH and I decided to take a day off from chores and worry! So we decided to go into Edmond to have some fun...
Since Chrysler took away the truck, we didn't have a payment to make. We talked about some sensible things we could do, but decided instead to have some fun with the extra money.
We drove into Edmond, and I went to Hancock Fabric and picked up some notions I can't find at Walmart. Then we went to Lowes. The stuff we got there *were* some things we've been needing and putting off, but we also took the time to look at some things we just *want* to do, and get some information about some projects we want to do.
Then we had lunch at Old Chicago. This is apparently a chain, but I had never heard of it before. Lunch was delicious, and the service was *excellent*!!
Next, it was off to Barnes & Noble.
We bought a Nook! It's very much like Amazon's Kindle, but has some other features we like, including being able to "lend" your books to others who have a Nook. I asked about downloading fanfic-- which I know some of my Kindle owning friends have been able to do. The nice young man did not know (he was unfamiliar with fanfic, LOL!) but said that the Nook could do everything the Kindle does, so I suppose I will have to figure that out.
We finished up at Michael's Arts & Crafts, where I picked up a few things I've been wanting to complete a project, and then headed home.
It was nearly 8PM by the time we got home, and Sugar was most insistent that her suppertime had been missed!
I've skimmed my flist, but I don't know if I will catch up on comments!
And if anyone else on my flist has a Nook, or can give suggestions about downloading fanfic, I'd appreciate any tips!

Date: 2010-08-01 03:25 am (UTC)Old Chicago is a chain that's mostly in larger cities... I don't think it's spread too far beyond the Midwest yet, though. When I can manage to afford going there (both the trip and the expense) I usually end up just sticking with appetizers and getting the pepperoni rolls. (Yum!)
Sounds like a very productive trip--a healthy mix of bread and jam.
*hugs*

Date: 2010-08-01 04:01 am (UTC)I "want" a Nook desperately and have played with one a bunch, and yep, I'm almost 100% sure you can upload fanfic to it. Enjoy your new toy!

Date: 2010-08-01 02:38 pm (UTC)We've been eyeing one ever since they were announced, so we were pleased when we actually had the extra money to get one.

Date: 2010-08-01 04:15 am (UTC)It is very easy. Save the fanfic as a pdf file. You have to have the latest version of MicroSoft Word to make this happen.
Then plug your nook into the computer. Open up the drive that is the nook. Open up My Documents in the nook file. Click and drag the pdf file into My Documents.
Safely remove hardware to disconnect the nook from the computer.
From the nook main menu, instead of opening My B&N Library, open up My Documents. It should be there.
Ta-da! All done.
Just a note from me: There are other ways to create .pdf files than from MS Word so if you don't have that, you can figure something else out by googling. Or ask me and I'll help you.

Date: 2010-08-02 02:40 am (UTC)I see you mentioned google docs. I was able to create a pdf file using that easily, using the 'download as pdf' feature. Can you do that?
such a pain you have to use pdf. I use .doc, .txt and .html files with my kindle when I download, don't know why the nook didn't do that.

Date: 2010-08-02 03:08 am (UTC)My word processing program is MS Office Word 2003. The more recent version I had with my new computer died after the "trial period", when we didn't pay to make it permanent. I actually use to use MS Works, and preferred that, but it doesn't work on this computer.
I will have to try that with Google tomorrow! Thanks for the idea!

Date: 2010-08-02 03:25 am (UTC)We use Word 2003 at work so I will check it tomorrow to see if you can save as pdf with that version.
We'll have you happily sending fic to your nook soon!

Date: 2010-08-03 07:56 pm (UTC)I now have one fanfic on my Nook!
Now I have to figure out an easier way to copy them into the file! But it's a start!
Thank you!!!

Date: 2010-08-01 10:40 am (UTC)I use my sony e.book reader everyday. If I had a fire it would be the first thing I grabbed beside my clothes!. I almost exclusivly use it for fanfic and uploading is really easy on mine. I have even introduced a nurse at the hospital to LOTR fanfic because she was curious about the reader.
I am currently trying to resist the newer version of what I have. It does lots more but the one I have is perfectly ok. *want, want, want!*
Have fun.
