I was not amused.

I read *his* trilogy, and was very disappointed in it, finding it dark and depressing. Why is it that some people can never give credit where it is due? Why do they have to tear down the people who pave the way? JRRT was considered the Author of the Century. Somehow, I don't think Pullman will rate that!

Actually, nothing I have ever read by or about Pullman has impressed me all that much. And -- to be blunt -- he doesn't say anything new about the human condition either. He's ripping off Milton half the time and a whole host of depressed or depressing authors the rest.

When I read the first of his books, I thought I was going to enjoy it. It had an interesting premise. But I kept waiting for something to happen that never did. There was absolutely no payoff for the emotional investment of reading time. He joined a short list of authors that I wished I had never read because they are such downers. 8-(
However, until I read this quote, it never occured to me that he was not only a depressing writer, but an arrogant jackass, as well.

He certainly didn't make me like his or his books any more by saying that. If he's going to say Tolkien's books don't show anything about the human condition, he could at least say the same about his own books because, well, they don't.

He's been praised to the skies by a lot of critics, so I guess maybe he has started to believe his own hype.
The fact is, I for one, will never re-read any of his books. But I would bet dollars to donuts that LotR is one of the most re-read works of fiction in existence.
Put *that* in your pipe and smoke it, Pullman.

Apparently, he's never read Tolkien's work, because anyone who has knows what an awesome writer JRRT is! I've never read this guy Pullman's work, but I don't think I will if I ever get the chance.

The nerve of the man! He's flaunting his own ludicrousness by saying that! Sheesh. I never did like his books.

Someone on one of the newsgroups suggested he just said it to get more publicity. I guess it worked,if so, but I hope that it's backfired on him. He has apparently made other remarks dissing the fantasy genre and people who read it (which begs the question of *why* does he write it?) And apparently he also has made some similarly rude remarks about C.S. Lewis. I guess he just has it in for the Inklings or something.
