Well, Rita finished off what Katrina started. The holly is down again. I don't think it will be possible to get it up again, but we may give it a try, *sigh*.

And something scary in the news tonight reminded me of something that happened after the storm that I didn't post in my diary...

The news that 3,000 registered sex offenders from N.O. are scattered around the country with no way to track them down easily is creepy.

Almost as creepy as this: when my sweet Marines were cleaning up my yard, they found this funny looking device, and showed it to me. I didn't know what it was until they enlightened me.

It was an ankle bracelet for house arrest, that had been cut off. One of the Marines advised that we turn it over to the cops, as it had an identifying number on it, which we did. But still...

Aww, your beautiful holly. I would try to save it one last time. They're hearty trees.

Eeek! Sex offenders and house arrest escapees! As if we all didn't have enough to worry about...

*tight hugs*

Stay safe tonight dear.

Ohmygod, that is do creepy. Do you know if it is an old one or something recent? I hope you find out it dates back to a long time ago. Still...I can understand your concern. And hopefully the sex offenders are still running.

I am so sorry about the holly tree. You may as well try again. There is nothing to lose and some trees are very resiliant.

I hope you, Mr. Dreamflower, and Anna are save and sound by now and putting your lives back together. I tremble to think about all the coming damage and danger from Rita. I hope you escape anything else. You deserve some peace. (((hugs)))

So sorry about your holly tree. I had hoped that the storm would miss you this time around. At least your internet is still up and running. That is creepy about the house arrest bracelet. I wonder if they found the person.

So sorry about the tree. All Tolkien fans grieve the loss of trees.

Yikes! Two scary things, but I think that the ankle bracelet would have sent me howling into the nearest room with a lock.

*hugs tight*

Oh my, that is scary. I've heard that a lot of people *awaiting* trial might get off, since the evidence was blown away. Now this. How horrible. (hugs)

And the poor holly tree sure is taking a beating.

It's easy for me to say move. I don't see why anyone would want to live in hurricane country, but then, you all probably say the same about us and our earthquakes and wild fires.

Eeek. *Hugs* I don't know if I could sleep knowing that. How are you coping?

Dreamflower, I don't know if you know this, but I am a forester in RL. If there is still a sizable remaining 'hinge' of roots that are still attached to the ground and rooted in and you can get that tree back up and seated in the wet soil, you could still be OK. It isn't the position of the tree that is the problem, but the extent of root damage and the extent of dessication.

Try getting the tree wired into place (use a lag bolt and washer through the tree, not a wire around it!) to keep air from under the ball of the root until it has a chance to get some new roots established. Oxygen isn't a problem (even roots need to breathe - they are living tissue!) but drying out is.

I can't give you any guarantees without seeing the actual tree, but I wanted to assure you that just falling over isn't a guarantee that the tree will die. ((((HUGS)))) and hope you remain safe.

Yup, your marines were right. Now, if mother nature will leave the poor thing alone to recover for a while, you might be OK. (((HUGS)))
