I would love to rec a delightful fic I've been reading today. Voices at the Door by [livejournal.com profile] rhymer23. It's a beautiful series of vignettes about the friendship between Bilbo and Aragorn, how they met and how their friendship developed over the years that Bilbo dwelt in Rivendell.

The author is fairly new to writing LotR fanfic, but her story is filled with rich and vivid descriptions and the characterizations of both Bilbo and Aragorn are spot on. You can see why they are drawn together, the hobbit in exile from his own people and the lonely king in exile whose wanderings are given a new purpose when he can describe them to another kindred soul. It's not a long story--only 14 short chapters!

Please do read this story if you are at all fond of Aragorn and/or Bilbo, and let the author know if you enjoy it half as much as I have been!

While I am quite sure that most of the folks on my flist have probably read this one, since it was posted in 2006, I just finished it for the first time, and am just blown away by it!

It's by [livejournal.com profile] mariole, and it's called By Life or Death. It's an AU in which Strider and the hobbits encounter a LIVE troll right after they found the petrified ones.

An epic battle with the monster and some brilliant h/c, especially for Aragorn and Frodo (though others come in for their share as well), some wonderful angst, lots of love, loyalty and friendship and terrific characterizations of all five heroes (I'm blown away by her Aragorn, as I don't think I'd ever seen her write him before; I'm used to her wonderful hobbits)--well, I'm still a little breathless.

So, maybe if you are new you haven't read this; if it sounds like it might appeal, I highly recommend it! And perhaps if you vaguely remember it from the past, you might want to renew your acquaintance with it--it is certainly worth a re-read!

Over at [livejournal.com profile] great_tales they've had an informal fic exchange going. Here's the one I wrote for [livejournal.com profile] labourslamp, who requested a bit of fanon-busting. Be warned, these are not the hobbits you are used to, LOL!

Title: The First Night Out of Bree
Rating: G
Fandom: Lord of the Rings
Characters: Aragorn-Strider, Frodo, Merry, Pippin and Sam
Words: 542
Warnings: Some very cherished fanons turned on their heads.
Disclaimer: Middle-earth and all its peoples belong to Tolkien. I own none of them, though some of them own me.
Summary: Strider finds himself with four rebellious hobbits on his hands.
Author’s notes: [livejournal.com profile] labourslamp's prompt was "Bust your favorite (or least favorite) fanon."  So I set out to do that, beginning with one I know she likes to bust, and busting one of my own favorites, as well as a couple of others, plus I threw in a bit of obscure and discarded info from the History of Middle-earth which I won't identify. Have fun guessing.

Here's the first part of a little something for the holidays:

Rating: G
Summary: Frodo Gamgee learns something about the High King...(If this story seems to bear a more than passing resemblance to a familiar seasonal song, it is not a coincidence.)

GOOD KING ELESSAR

PART I: HITHER PAGE AND STAND BY ME
