Every year I try to come up with a new song from the Shire for Yule. This year's offering turned into something a little different!

A New Year's Game of the Shire

This is a game played on the first day of the New Year, which by the Shire Reckoning is called Second Yule. It's a popular feature at most New Year celebrations, and often even the adults will join in before the song ends.

The game is started by some of the children beginning to sing:

Now the year is spent,
We don't know where it went!

(A few children begin the game, holding hands and skipping forward in time to the song.)

Don't look for it behind;
A new one we must find!
Take my hand and help us look!

(At this they break apart and grab other children into the line, and then begin to skip once more. This is repeated after each chorus, so that the line gets longer and longer. The children may weave throughout the hole, and even go outdoors.)

It won't be in the larder,
It won't be under the bed.
Look for it a little harder--
No, it's not in the shed.

Don't look for it behind;
A new one we must find!
Take my hand and help us look!

(Repeat the actions of the chorus)

It isn't in the garden,
It's not up in a tree.
Oh, I beg your pardon,
Is it anywhere you can see?

Don't look for it behind;
A new one we must find!
Take my hand and help us look!

(Repeat the actions of the chorus)

Perhaps it's in tomorrow!
Is that what you say?
But the future we can't borrow;
Could it be here today?

Why, it's right here today!
Why, it's right here today!
We found it! We found it! Yay! Yay! Yay!

(The children drop hands and jump up and down at each "Yay!", and then fall to the ground at the end.)

This particular game is not played on any other day of the year, but may be played several times on that day.

In other news--Monday we got a nice surprise in the mail. A check for $85 from the electric co-op we belonged to in Mississippi! We did not expect to get one this year--but apparently they had more than 5 years worth of dividends to send us! (They hold the first few years, but we both thought it was 5 years, which would have made last year's check the last one--but apparently not! He says he thinks they may have held the first ten years; that would be cool, as it means we'd get them for another 4 years..)

Yesterday we went to Stillwater and did a little Christmas shopping. I picked up a few stocking stuffers, and the DH got one of my gifts--he needed me to pick it out, as it is a new desk chair! I'd been needing one badly, but it was not on my Christmas list, so I was quite surprised when we stopped at Staples and he made me go and sit in chairs, LOL!

I plan to finish my hobbit feet and my costume alterations today, and whip up a cloak for the DH. Tomorrow if I have time, I will make him a Gandalf hat.

Tomorrow night!!!!! *grin* I am so excited! Our son also decided to go with us, so we will pick him up on the way.

To dungeons deep and caverns old..."

I thought that our Thanksgiving Day would be pretty easy and low key, even though we were expecting company for the day for the first time in several years. My son was bringing his new girlfriend and her four kids, 13,11,10 and 1.Read more... )

My DH is so cute.

DH: (in hopeful tone of voice) It's only 43 days until Christmas.

Me: (cautiously, knowing him very well) Is it really?

DH: Uh-huh! It is! It will be here before you know it.

Me: ...Aaand?

DH: Can we decorate? I could get the tree out this weekend...

Me: *sigh* No, dear. But we can take the rest of the Halloween decorations down and put up the Thanksgiving ones...

DH: (disappointed) Oh, okay...

(It's actually a little late for the first appearance of this annual conversation--it usually takes place within a day or two of Halloween...)

So, I still have a bit of work to do on the next chapter of "Good King Elessar", but I thought I would go ahead and post this story, written for [livejournal.com profile] pearl_took1 on the LOTR_Community_GFICS Yahoo!group.

I think of this story as AU. It doesn't quite fit into my usual timeline, but I had to fit in all of the elements. I hope you enjoy:

Summary--well, here's Pearl's request, which I attempted to fulfill, with the possible exception of the lightning, which ended up being merely metaphorical.
"Request:
I would like a humorous story with the setting at the Great Smials. Pippin is very young (but not an infant). Gandalf is present and is putting on a fireworks show to celebrate Yule. The story must include a lightening strike as a secondary element, but without any great emphasis on the resulting fire. At some point, Gandalf gets into the holiday punch, which of course, has been spiked!"

Ah, I'm surfacing now after a very hectic pre-holiday rush, to say:

Merry Christmas, or other winter holiday of your choice!

I'm finally relaxing this morning--I had so many last minute things to finish, not least of which was my Yule Exchange Fic for [livejournal.com profile] pearl_took1 in the LOTR GFics yahoo!group. However, I got it done just barely in time.

I finished my Christmas sewing, but not my knitting. And I finally got all my cards out, though I doubt if any of them arrived before Christmas!

And I have just one thing I have to share:

Here's the first part of a little something for the holidays:

Summary: Frodo Gamgee learns something about the High King...(If this story seems to bear a more than passing resemblance to a familiar seasonal song, it is not a coincidence.)
