This time eight years ago today, I was huddled on my couch with a battery operated radio as [livejournal.com profile] marigoldg's mother and I were trying to find out what was going on as Hurricane Katrina raged around us. The storm lasted for hours and hours, and when we went outside, here was the sight that greeted us:

I kept a diary during those long days with no power and no communication. For those of you who are new to my flist, you may not have seen it:
My Hurricane Katrina Diary.

Hurricane Katrina: Then and Now from the Sun-Herald.

The Coast has yet to recover fully.

Such a horrible thing, though the before/after video is heartening. Things will never be the same, but it's nonetheless good to see people putting what they can back together and building/planting new the things they can't.

Having dealt with a similar disaster, if smaller on a geographic scale (the 2007 ice storm), where we lost power for 2+ weeks, I can definitely relate to the bliss of finally being able to take a warm shower and yes, use the washing machine again. What a marvel, washing machines! And I can relate to the gratitude for those in the armed forces who came to assist, in our case the National Guard who set up drinking water tanks for our small town.

I wonder... do you still have the purse you made, and did you ever post a photo?

I remember how worried we all were, and how precious every small bit of news was.

I remember reading your diary of the hurricane. It was shortly after we'd friended each other, and I felt as though I got to know you so much more as I read about how you coped with the experiences of that storm. Thanks for posting the before and after video link.

I'm almost glad I didn't know you while that was going on or I would have been worried sick! But I think I met you through reading your Katrina diary. What an trying time, you will never forget this date, ever.

Oh man... I can definitely empathize... I live in New York so went through Sandy. Two of my friends lost their homes. It's horrible how such things happen and amazing at how people come together during them.
