dreamflower: (Katrina Anniversary by <lj user="danae_b)
This time eight years ago today, I was huddled on my couch with a battery operated radio as [livejournal.com profile] marigoldg's mother and I were trying to find out what was going on as Hurricane Katrina raged around us. The storm lasted for hours and hours, and when we went outside, here was the sight that greeted us:

I kept a diary during those long days with no power and no communication. For those of you who are new to my flist, you may not have seen it:
My Hurricane Katrina Diary.

Hurricane Katrina: Then and Now from the Sun-Herald.

The Coast has yet to recover fully.

On August 29, 2005, the same thing was happening on the Gulf Coast that is happening right now.

Right now, many of my same friends and relatives who suffered through Katrina are now experiencing Isaac. Right now, they must be recalling that horrible time.

As I do every year, here is a link to My Hurricane Katrina Diary, an account of my experience with the storm from the beginning until I was once more reconnected to the rest of the world.

Please keep all those who are going through all this once more in your thoughts and prayers!

I was so relieved that Hurricane Irene was not worse, and yet even though it was not as horrific as predicted, it's more than bad enough for all the people facing power outages, downed trees and flooded streets.

As I do every year on this day, here is a link to my Hurricane Katrina Diary

If you are wondering what some of those people are going through right now, it's a sample.

I know I have several friends on the East Coast. I hope all of you will hunker down or bug out as called for, and I pray you will all stay safe.

A hurricane is not something to trifle with. I speak from personal experience.

*sends (((hugs))) to you all*

In case anyone is still interested, here are some of the pictures I took last week along Highway 90. There were some other places I wanted to take pics of, but there was no safe place to pull over and aim the camera. Thanks muchly to [livejournal.com profile] danachan for helping me to post these.

Thanks to the combined efforts of [livejournal.com profile] danachan who finally managed to sort things out and get them posted for me, and to [livejournal.com profile] grey_wonderer who got them onto Photobucket for me, I am finally able to show everyone these pictures from Hurricane Katrina...

At any rate, the workers finally arrived at about 12:30; it remains to be seen how much they will accomplish today, but I feel a little bit more hopeful now...
