dreamflower: gandalf at bag end (Default)

because the DH stayed up past midnight finishing it, and he's dying to talk about it, but he won't give me any spoilers. When I told him I might not get around to it any time soon, he gave me puppy dog eyes, LOL, so it looks like I will start it today.

And it's not that I don't *like* Harry, after all. I do.

But he's not a hobbit.

LOL! I gave up on Harry after book four. I have book five two years now, I think, and I only touched it when I retrieved it at the bookstore and placed it here in the bookcase. I am still glad many are enjoying it, but for me after book 1, the plot ans storylines feels stretched and thin.

No, he's not a hobbit, but I'm still looking forward to reading HBP. I don't know if I'll start on the cousin that I picked up for my cousin yesterday (she was working, and she's not come and picked it up from me yet, and I could read through it before she does, I think). Or if I'll just wait until I get the copy that Jen's going to send me (UK printing, because then it'll match the rest of my set -- she's too good to me, really).

You'll share your thoughts when you read, won't you? Because I like knowing what people think about the book.

Just imagine him as a hobbit. Same story. Different setting. He'd look good with furry feet.

It's a better read than book five was, and a faster one too. And I have nothing but sympathy for DH, bursting with things to talk about!

Listen to the DH and read it! I'm looking forward to my dad to read it so I have someone at home to talk to!

No, he's not a hobbit, but he does have a lot in common with Frodo:

He's an orphan.
He has an heirloom that makes him invisible.
He is the only one who can destroy the Dark Lord.
He has a faithful sidekick.
He looks peculiar, for a Muggle or a Wizard.
His mentor is a wise and elderly wizard.
He fought against spiders.
The Dursleys are the modern day version of the SBs.

That's just a few. I'm sure I'll think of more later. ^_^

He's scarred.
Another similarity with Frodo, which I cannot reveal, because it would be a spoiler for the new book.
He shows mercy (in the shrieking shack, as Frodo shows pity to Gollum) which is the crucial difference between him and the ones he is opposing.
He is willing to sacrifice himself for the ones he loves.
The dark lord covets an object which he keeps away from him (the Philosopher's Stone, the Ring).
He is motivated in his struggle to protect the place he loves (the Shire, Hogwarts).

Harry did show mercy in the Shrieking Shack, but then in OOTP, he tries to kill, er, whatshername, Bellatrix? But other than that whole episode at the end of that book, he does generally show good judgement.

I would say Harry's blood other than the stone, since its his blood that brings Voldemort back to power, and it is also linked to what took away his power in the first place.

Darn JKR stealing Tolkien's ideas! ;)

I know, huh? LOL But then, Tolkien borrowed on ideas also, so I can't complain. ;)

Actually, she says she only read LOTR once when she was very young, but it could be that a lot of those ideas were ingrained into her subconcious and took slightly new form when she began writing her books. I just wish she was as meticulous as JRR was with her details and plotlines.

You could pretend he's a Gandalf junior

I hope you enjoy your read, even if it isn't hobbits. It's a lot faster to get through than the last one. I'll be looking forward to seeing your thoughts afterwards. :)

And that's why I'm not that fond of HP...no hobbits!!!

I'm guessing you've been busy with the classes at Michael's? Just wondering since I haven't heard from you!
