He shows mercy (in the shrieking shack, as Frodo shows pity to Gollum) which is the crucial difference between him and the ones he is opposing.
He is willing to sacrifice himself for the ones he loves.
The dark lord covets an object which he keeps away from him (the Philosopher's Stone, the Ring).
He is motivated in his struggle to protect the place he loves (the Shire, Hogwarts).
