because the DH stayed up past midnight finishing it, and he's dying to talk about it, but he won't give me any spoilers. When I told him I might not get around to it any time soon, he gave me puppy dog eyes, LOL, so it looks like I will start it today.

And it's not that I don't *like* Harry, after all. I do.

But he's not a hobbit.

No, he's not a hobbit, but he does have a lot in common with Frodo:

He's an orphan.
He has an heirloom that makes him invisible.
He is the only one who can destroy the Dark Lord.
He has a faithful sidekick.
He looks peculiar, for a Muggle or a Wizard.
His mentor is a wise and elderly wizard.
He fought against spiders.
The Dursleys are the modern day version of the SBs.

That's just a few. I'm sure I'll think of more later. ^_^

He's scarred.
Another similarity with Frodo, which I cannot reveal, because it would be a spoiler for the new book.
He shows mercy (in the shrieking shack, as Frodo shows pity to Gollum) which is the crucial difference between him and the ones he is opposing.
He is willing to sacrifice himself for the ones he loves.
The dark lord covets an object which he keeps away from him (the Philosopher's Stone, the Ring).
He is motivated in his struggle to protect the place he loves (the Shire, Hogwarts).

Harry did show mercy in the Shrieking Shack, but then in OOTP, he tries to kill, er, whatshername, Bellatrix? But other than that whole episode at the end of that book, he does generally show good judgement.

I would say Harry's blood other than the stone, since its his blood that brings Voldemort back to power, and it is also linked to what took away his power in the first place.

Excellent. I've noted some of those similarities in the past, but not all of them. I can't but think JKR was influenced by JRRT, but then that goes for any fantasy written in the last half-century...

Actually, she says she only read LOTR once when she was very young, but it could be that a lot of those ideas were ingrained into her subconcious and took slightly new form when she began writing her books. I just wish she was as meticulous as JRR was with her details and plotlines.
