Fic Update: A Different Kind of Mary Sue
Oct. 25th, 2012 08:47 pmIn 2006 I began posting a silly little crack!fic at
wee_hobbits. I posted two parts and then got stuck. Well, the other day I got unstuck, and finished it for
shirebound's gift folder. Here is Part 3; there is one more part and a short epilogue to go. I included links to Parts 1 and 2, since after six years, it's not likely anyone actually remembers it...

FOR SHIREBOUND!!!
Oct. 22nd, 2012 07:15 amDearest
shirebound, knowing that you will be having your surgery in a few days, a few of your friends have made a special folder for you. It contains many of your very favorite stories, as well as hopefully some new ones as well. There are also some pictures to cheer you up as well! Several of your friends contributed, and there may well be other contributions before it's all over!
All of the stories are in an easy to print out PDF format, or you can upload them if you prefer. But we thought if you could easily print them out it would help to pass the time as you recover!
You can find the folder at Stories and Stuff for Shirebound" on Dropbox, and I have sent you an invitation to it as well, to make it easier to get to. We hope this give you a few days time to print out the ones you want to read first!

Fannish lagniappe and churchy stuff...
Oct. 14th, 2012 02:43 pmOne silver lining from our current situation is that the DH has been available to come to church with me for a few weekends. Today we decided to go out to lunch after the service, and ended up at the local steakhouse.
As I was getting out of the car I heard a voice say: "Dreamflower?"
I immediately turned and responded (I always suspected I would answer to that name if anyone ever called me by it in person, and I was right, even though this was the first time it came up in RL, LOL!)
She recognized me by the decal on the back of my car ("The Road goes ever on and on..."). It was a lady I had met about three or four years back, at a social gathering put on by our (at the time) pastor's wife. We had clicked--she was a huge LotR fan--and I kind of turned her on to fanfic. She has actually left me a few reviews at SoA, but I've never seen her in person since then. We chatted for a few minutes in the parking lot, and she revealed that she is still following several of my stories (I did have another review from her about two months ago or so) as well as those of a couple of other SoA authors she mentioned. We spoke again as we were leaving the restaurant, and it made me grin so hard!
The service this morning was very nice...( Read more... )
Anyway, I hope to get a bit of writing in this afternoon, and maybe we will start putting up our Hallowe'en decorations!

I get rather annoyed with the way newscasters and journalists suddenly decide to change the pronunciation of certain words or make up new ones out of a clear blue sky, and then suddenly everyone is doing it.
It's always bugged me that sometime in the last decade and a half, the word I had always pronounced as "Huh-RAHS-ment" suddenly turned into "Harris-ment". And at some point in time a "troop" became ONE soldier and not, well, a "troop" of soldiers.
More recently, journalists in the sewing industry have decided to use the word "sewist" for one who sews, rather than the perfectly acceptable word sewer, for fear I suppose, that even in context people might mistake it for the similarly spelled and differently pronounced word meaning a pipe that takes away waste. Personally I'd rather risk someone making the mistake. "Sewist" sounds awfully pretentious to me.
Today, in separate radio newscasts (we were running errands all day and listening to Public Radio) I heard a couple of words that made me blink.
In the first, I learned that a person who is of the ethnic group that I have always known as "Bosnian" is now called a "Bosniac". Say what? Since when? It sounds odd and makes me think of "maniac" and "Brainiac", neither of which have particularly positive connotations. Who decided to make this change? Why? What purpose does it serve? And how long before everyone else is saying "Bosniac"? Is a person from Florida sudden going to become a "Floridiac"? Or will Canadians become "Canadiacs"?
And then there was the discussion of politics. This group of pundits was discussing the upcoming debates and what the President and his opponent's strategy was going to be, and how it was going to go and they started talking about this being a "pre-mortem". Huh? They are going to dissect it BEFORE it'sdead, er, happened? That has got to be one of the dumbest bits of politispeak (see I can adapt to some new words) I have ever heard of. You can hash something out all you want before it happens, but for goodness' sake! find a word for the process that makes SENSE! "Post-mortem" for going over something AFTER it happens makes a certain amount of metaphorical sense. But "mortem" does not mean "talk about something"; "mortem" refers to DEAD! *sheesh!!!*
Dumb. Just dumb.

Surfacing briefly from trying to get the winners' announcement post ready for the Tree & Flower Awards (finally got the counts tallied and now wresting with formatting) to post a couple of things I wanted to post about earlier but didn't get the chance.
Did anyone else see ABC newscaster Josh Elliot and Stephen Colbert being geeky about The Hobbit trailer on the red carpet before the Emmys the other night?
Listening to the BBC LotR production on my pillow speaker at bedtime is NOT conducive to sleep.
Politics are making me nuts. PLEASE let election day get here soon!
Doggies and kitties have very sharp teeth, even when they are only giving you love-nips.
