I've updated "Eleventy-one Years: Too Short a Time"!

In Chapter 19, it's Rethe (March) and things seem to be going from bad to worse. But spring has to come sometime...

I thought that our Thanksgiving Day would be pretty easy and low key, even though we were expecting company for the day for the first time in several years. My son was bringing his new girlfriend and her four kids, 13,11,10 and 1.Read more... )

This was a day I was going to spend finishing up both art and a story for this month's challenges, so that I could post them without being late. I was also going to post some pics I'd been meaning to post.

Well, instead we spent the day with the plumber, who took care of our washing machine (the drain was stopped and running over) and the refrigerator repairman (because water was leaking into the vegetable drawer and freezing there).

And just before the plumber arrived, as I was attempting to clean up the kitchen before he got there, my utensil drawer broke (actually it was the track to the drawer which broke.)

So the plumber was here for about an hour, and after fixing the drain informed us that the problem is roots in the line, which if we do not get taken care of, will mean that the drain will stop up again. Ball park estimate? $2,500.00. Luckily, he thinks that the fix he did today (which, thanks to our home warranty only cost $60) will hold until next spring. The kicker? We don't have any trees large enough to infiltrate our lines; it has to be one of our neighbor's trees.

Then of course, there was a flurry to get the fridge and freezer empty before the refrigerator guy got here. Stuff from the freezer at the bottom went into our chest freezer on the porch. Then ever surface and counter in the kitchen was covered with the stuff from the fridge. It didn't take him long to fix it--and it cost us $50.

Then we had to try and locate a new track for the drawer, so that the DH could try to fix it--that took most of the rest of the afternoon...

Also, has anyone else been having trouble with Photobucket? It's being all weird. When I go there a pop-up appears asking me if I want to take a "tour" of their new features. Before I can either click on it OR close it, the whole page turns kind of grey and the screen freezes.

I swiped this meme from [livejournal.com profile] pandemonium_213 last week. It took this long for my voice post to show up!

Upload/record the answers to the following questions. Some people used "vocaroo". I used LJ voice-post

1. Your name and/or username:

2. Where you're from: (As specific or as generalized as you wish, depending on your level of comfort)

3. The following words: aunt, roof, route, wash, oil, theater, iron, salmon, caramel, fire, water, sure, data, ruin, crayon, toilet, New Orleans, pecan, both, again, probably, spitting image, Alabama, lawyer, coupon, mayonnaise, syrup, pajamas, caught, orange, coffee, direction, naturally, aluminum and herbs.

4. What is it called when you throw toilet paper on a house?

5. What is the bubbly carbonated drink called?

6. What do you call gym shoes?

7. What do you say to address a group of people?

8. What do you call the kind of spider that has an oval-shaped body and extremely long legs?

9. What do you call your grandparents?

10. What do you call the wheeled contraption in which you carry groceries at the supermarket?

11. What do you call it when rain falls while the sun is shining?

12. What is the thing you change the TV channel with?

Here are my answers:

I have the solution to this "every four years madness" that gets the whole country tied up in knots, costs untold amounts of money, and puts everyone under so much stress.

1. One term. Six years. (With an eight year limit based on the president getting re-elected in the fourth year, nearly two full years are wasted campaigning.) Imagine if the president had six uninterrupted years to focus on nothing but his job and with no need to worry about getting re-elected.

2. Strict spending limits on the campaign. I do not buy into the whole "money is free speech" business. Money is money, and if something costs money it's not free.

3. Strict time limits on the campaign. This process is so stretched out that voters are sick of it all by election day. A week's campaigning allowed per primary state, and no national campaigning or national ads allowed prior to the party conventions.

4. Standardization of the ballots for national office. Some states have a process for allowing third parties on the ballot, some allow write-ins and some don't, and some states manage to shut out any party except for the two main parties. There is something wrong with this.

Anyhow, I think life would be a lot less stressful this way, and maybe the government would actually be able to get things done without the specter of re-election hanging over everyone.

It's over

Inspired by [livejournal.com profile] the_mad_hobbit I am reposting a little political fic I wrote for Marigold's Challenges several years ago. There was a lot going on at the Free Fair in Michel Delving in 1427, and the election of a new mayor was only part of it...

There was some coverage of the voting in OKC, as a reporter interviewed people at one of the local polling precincts. She stopped one lady (she looked like maybe in her mid-60s).

This lady said she did not know how to read and write, but with help, she had voted for the first time in her life! She said it was too important to vote this time to be proud.

Most of y'all know who I voted for in the Presidential race and I know some of you agree and some don't; I hope you voted for the person you think best.

There were some interesting state and local measures on the ballot--two of which I was not even aware of until I read the ballot.

I voted to raise our county taxes by 1/16 of a percent in order to provide up to date equipment for the fire department.

And I voted for allowing alcohol to be served on Sunday in this county. I don't drink myself, but I can't see that blue laws really serve any real purpose in this day and age.

On the state level I voted to NOT abolish the Department of Human Services, to retain affirmative action, to do away with taxing services and licenses, and to lower the cap on property taxes from 5% to 3%.

There were a few other issues I voted on, but those were the main ones.

Alas!

Poor Polymer!Frodo, I knew him well. I returned from my knitting circle tonight to discover he was assassinated. It appears to have been a conspiracy. Miss Belladonna Took threw him from his high place upon my desk and then, to make certain he was dead, Miss Sophie ate most of his head, leaving only a few dark curls as evidence...

I thought I had a picture of him, but cannot find it. However, he is the default icon for [livejournal.com profile] lotr_crafts if you want to see what he once looked like.

*sigh*

This is the first chance I got to upload our Halloween pics. I thought I'd try crossposting them from DW, and see how it works. I am having to use Rich Text, because I can't remember the DW code for a cut; also the pics are very big. Sorry!

Alton Brown was on GMA this morning, showing how to make spooky gummy treats.

He was wearing a bow tie and a brown plaid sports jacket--his usual.

He was also wearing a fez. I took one look and said "Eleven! He's a Doctor Who fan!"

When the anchors came over, one asked "What's with the fez?" he did not say that he was Doctor Who. He just grinned, lifted the fez and put it back on and said "Fezes are cool!"

I do love sly sneak geekery!

I keep seeing hints that LJ is making major changes in our flists. So what's that about? I can't seem to find anything out about it.
