I've posted a couple of new fics over at [livejournal.com profile] hobbit_holidays:

A Father's Fears A six drabble set on what it was like to be the father of Peregrin Took.

Fathers by Choice Elrond and Bilbo worry about the sons of their hearts. A double drabble

I have always been proud to be a United Methodist, a denomination whose motto is "Open Hearts, Open Minds, Open Doors".

And then someone does something like this.

*sigh* At least I have the satisfaction of knowing that most of the other Methodists I know also find this embarrassing.

Many years ago (back in the late 1980s) I was for a couple of years, an Avon Lady. I finally gave it up because I began to spend more than I made. But one of the wonderful things I got from Avon was a gorgeous scarf--a silky headscarf with a floral motif and a unicorn in one corner. I've been an avid unicorn collector since the 70s, so of course I got it, and then realized there was no way to wear it in which the unicorn could be shown off--whatever way I folded and tied it, it just didn't work out. I was still pleased with just having it, so I folded it up and put it away. The other day, I had it out and unfolded it and looked at it, and had an epiphany. Besides being a scarf, it was also fabric and it wouldn't take much to turn it into a very nice blouse...

Blazing Saddles is crude, filled with racist language, ethnic slurs, sexism, political incorrectness, potty humor, ridiculous slapstick and jokes that were old enough to grow mold even then. It would be impossible to make a movie like that now, and I am not sure that's a bad thing.

It's also very funny.

And Madelaine Kahn was brilliant.

Just saying.

One of my most favorite gifts I got at Christmas last year was the cast recording of The Lord of the Rings musical.

And I absolutely adore "The Road Goes On"; it's one of my favorite arrangements.

But there's one verse that both amuses and exasperates me. Tell me what is wrong with this?

Sweet pink trout
Tickled from a stream
Milk a goat,
Churn it into cream.

My answer is behind the cut, after some spoiler space, so you can guess the answer if you want to, before you look at mine.

Why can't my silly brain just let it go and accept it as poetic license? *rolls eyes at self*

[livejournal.com profile] claudia603 wrote me the cutest bit of comment fic here!

Just adorable--Bilbo encountering Bofur BEFORE the Unexpected Party!

Apparently Amazon has decided that fanfiction can be profitable.

I don't like the sound of this. I REALLY don't. Here's my comment to the article:Read more... )

ETAThank you to [livejournal.com profile] ramblin_rosie for this link, where you can find this VERY OMINOUS quote:

“We will also give the World Licensor a license to use your new elements and incorporate them into other works without further compensation to you.”

and this:

"“Amazon Publishing will acquire all rights to your new stories, including global publication rights, for the term of copyright.”

Which means your special AU or your awesome OC is no longer yours. And you only get paid for your story once

I'm fine!

Just to let everyone know: none of the tornadoes that hit the state came anywhere near us. We had a lot of wind, rain and hail last night, but no twisters! Those mostly hit to the west of us.

FINALLY I have updated "Eleventy-one"!

"EleventyOne Years: Too Short a Time, Book One"
Chapter 22: Afternoon at the Great Smials at Many Paths to Tread
Chapter 22: Afternoon at the Great Smials at Stories of Arda
Chapter 22: Afternoon at the Great Smials at FF.net
The Bagginses arrive at the Great Smials for Adalgrim's wedding.

Also, this is a rec for those of you who, like me, enjoy reading fic on their e-readers. I have tried out a few of the online things for uploading fic, and found most of them wanting. Missing chapters and messed up formatting, or simply not wanting to upload on my comp. So for a couple of years now I've had to copy/paste fic into a doc and then convert it into PDF for uploading on my Nook. Even then sometimes words would be randomly out of place.

Well, at least for fics at ff.net and Ao3, I now have a solution: FLAGfic. It is SO easy! I have requested that they add MPTT and SoA to their list of archives that they work with--I hope that they will! Meanwhile, I have managed to snag several stories some of which I've never read before. I have a request: I know a lot of my friends post at ff.net as well as SoA and MPTT--some of you I already know, like [livejournal.com profile] shirebound, [livejournal.com profile] blslarner and [livejournal.com profile] lindahoyland, but not others. If you post there as well, please leave me a comment so I can find your stories!

Finally, a bit of a personal thing; Read more... )

While I am quite sure that most of the folks on my flist have probably read this one, since it was posted in 2006, I just finished it for the first time, and am just blown away by it!

It's by [livejournal.com profile] mariole, and it's called By Life or Death. It's an AU in which Strider and the hobbits encounter a LIVE troll right after they found the petrified ones.

An epic battle with the monster and some brilliant h/c, especially for Aragorn and Frodo (though others come in for their share as well), some wonderful angst, lots of love, loyalty and friendship and terrific characterizations of all five heroes (I'm blown away by her Aragorn, as I don't think I'd ever seen her write him before; I'm used to her wonderful hobbits)--well, I'm still a little breathless.

So, maybe if you are new you haven't read this; if it sounds like it might appeal, I highly recommend it! And perhaps if you vaguely remember it from the past, you might want to renew your acquaintance with it--it is certainly worth a re-read!

Would someone please go to my profile page on FF.net and see if my avatar appears? (My name there is the same as here.)

It's not showing up there to me, but when I check my image page it appears. Also when I checked the "Just In" page for LOTR fic, it's not showing up for some of my stories.

If it is not showing up, does anyone know to whom I'd report the problem? And if it is, why would it not show up for me?

As I was watching the coverage of the events in Boston, our OKC channel broke away from the national news to cover the memorial events for the OKC bombing of the Murrow building 18 years ago today.

A sad reminder of just how long horrible things have been happening, and then just keep on happening...

Weather disasters and horrific accidents are bad enough. But realizing just how cruel people can be to other people, over and over and over...

Well, it's been going on since the world began. But somehow it seems more awful now, perhaps because we know about it as soon as it happens, and see it in detail.

[livejournal.com profile] ford_of_bruinen asked for prompts for poetry, and she wrote me two lovely poems about little Turin and Sador Labadal! They are very touching and (of course) a little sad, seeing as they are about Turin--but quite lovely!

Hello all!

Starting tomorrow, it looks as though I will be offline at the house for a while--I am not sure for how long--it could be anywhere from a few days to a few weeks. I will try to go to the library to do stuff, but I will not be as available as I have been. Emails may pile up, and any posting will be intermittent at best. I am hoping my semi-absence will be brief, but since I'm not sure, I am going to try and set things up in advance.

I am going to post the [livejournal.com profile] lotr_community April challenge today, but in order to expedite things, I will make it so that you do not have to wait for me to send out prompts.

I suggest that if you have any questions you send them to Cathleen (or to Dawn if they are of a technical nature).

I'm sorry this is happening right in the middle of B2MeM. I hope to have time to catch up on your stories during Reading Week. And I may have time to finish a few stories and post them from the library.

In more pleasant news: I got to see TH:AUJ today. My son got me the DVD (It's the combo pack that includes the DVD, the Blu-ray, and the Ultra-violet whatever that is.) and he and his girlfriend and her kids came over to watch it with me and have lunch; they just left a few minutes ago. It was a wee bit more hectic than watching it at the theater, but still, lots of fun. And I am so proud of Sophie--she behaved beautifully with the kids, and we only had to shut her in the bedroom while we ate lunch. Miss Belladonna mostly hid.

I'd also like to signal boost the following community. It is having a "prompt fest" to which you can request plot-bunnies for stories set in The Hobbit. They are accepting gen prompts as well as pairing prompts, and have several of those requested already. You can post your prompt requests between now and March 26. The great part? You do not have to claim a prompt to write in order to request a prompt! (Of course, they hope you will, but it is not a requirement.) So if there is a special story you'd like to see written, but you don't think you have time to write yourself, this is a great thing to take part in!

Here's the link to check it out!

My paid LJ is up today, and payday's not till tomorrow. Oh well. I can make do with the free until then. But gee, it's not very pretty.

The week's nearly at an end, and I still have several incomplete B2MEM bits on my hard drive! I must try really hard to get a few more finished and posted!

And I just realized I only have one sentence written for my GFIC challenge story. Yeesh!!!

Oh--[livejournal.com profile] browngirl, AKA [livejournal.com profile] rubynye has written a lovely little gen fic about the Fell Winter over here: at The Hobbit kink meme, in which Bilbo tells Bofur about the Fell Winter! It's really nice; check it out!

And completely on another subject that's a little TMI of the feminine sort, I need some advice...Read more... )

This afternoon our son treated us to a movie and then took us to dinner at a local Chinese buffet.

I thought I'd post some of my thoughts about the movie; behind the first cut, some non-spoilery general impressions...Read more... )

So that's my thoughts on the matter! Has anyone else on my flist seen it yet?
