dreamflower: gandalf at bag end (bag end 2 by <lj user="danae_b">)
A very nice quiet Sunday. We went to church this morning for the first time in three weeks (due to first his cold and then mine), and the service was lovely.

And our son called and wants to treat us to a movie this afternoon, so in a few minutes we'll be meeting him at the theater to see Oz, the Great and Powerful! I certainly hope it lives up to its trailers!

One thing I have always appreciated about the Tolkien fandom is that it has always seemed to eschew "cutesy smooshed together pairing names" such as one often sees for example, in HP and other fandoms. If you LIKE these, just pass on by and attribute this rant to cold-induced curmudgeonliness...

Move along now, it's just a cranky old lady complaining...

All last week the DH was fighting with a nasty cold, and ended up missing a day-and-a-half of work. (The half was when they sent him home with a temp of 102).

I knew I'd get it sooner or later, and now it's hit with a vengence. My sinuses feel like they are stuffed with cotton, I have the energy of a wet noodle, my left ear is stopped up and I have ringing in both ears, and I am starting to cough and hack. And I'm on my second soggie hankie.

But the worst is a couple of little things. I have a cold sore on my upper lip that feels like it's been slashed with a razor, and a sore cuticle on my right middle finger that feels like someone's stuck a needle in it. It *feels* like a huge hangnail, but there is no evidence of one. Just throbbing pain.

Why are these little things always so painful out of all proportion to their seriousness?

Fixing to have some apple juice and some more Tylenol and maybe fall asleep for a while. Ugh.

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] children_of_lir for the link to this very interesting thread. It raises some very interesting questions.

http://fanficrants.livejournal.com/11256436.html

For example, can you spoil a seventy-five year old story?

Whose responsibility is it for spoilers--the person who's posting fic, or the person who wants to avoid the spoilers?

And the one that puzzles me most: Were the children of 1937 really more intelligent than the children of the present day?

(BTW, and totally OT: I DO NOT LIKE THE NEW POSTING PAGE!)

They are having a neat discussion at TORN about the wisdom of Middle-earth. Seems like it would be a fun thing to explore here.

My own response is here behind the cut, but I'd love to see what others might say:

A library in OKC is sponsoring a Fanfiction Contest Unlike most such contests, there's no age limit, and the only restrictions seem to be entry length (2500 words or less) and the ability to show up in person on the day the winners are announced. OKC is a little bit of a drive, but certainly close enough for me to be there if I can get a Saturday off.

I've culled through my stories for ones of appropriate length. I tried to avoid stories that relied too much on OCs or minor canon characters, or too heavily on my own special universe. I've included one poem and one drabble set, the rest are fics. So now I need some help narrowing these down to the one I'd like to enter.

[Poll #1895961]

ETA: There is one other rule: it must feature a canon character.

My plan for today was to work on my WIPs, but a thunderstorm made it necessary to turn off the computer, so I sat down with a pen and notebook, with every intent of finishing up my challenge story for this month.

Instead, this little one-shot came to me out of nowhere:

Tumblr is great, but my fandom heart is in LJ.

I just posted a little bit of silly at [livejournal.com profile] great_tales "Three Fandoms Walk into a Bar" challenge:

I've been working on a two-way crossover with two of these fandoms already. This story has nothing to do with that one, except that the worlds just seem to naturally mesh...

Title: At the Sign of the Poison Apple
Author: Dreamflower
Rating: G
Characters: Explained in the End Notes
Fandoms: Lord of the Rings, Shrek II, Once Upon a Time
Summary: There are hobbits who have adventures thrust upon them, and there are hobbits who go out looking for trouble adventure. Sometimes the latter find more than they could ever imagine.

OK, here's a question for my friends who post at ff.net:

This morning I wanted to post a crossover. I chose LotR as my first selection. Then I clicked on the second selection, from the dropdown I chose "TV shows" and then from the other dropdown I chose "Monkees" (Yes, it's that little crack!fic I did for B2MeM last year) and then...nothing happened. The dropdowns went away and I had a red sentence telling me to "Please choose a second category". So, is there a step I am missing? What's up with that?

(I tried the FAQs. They were less than helpful.)

OK, I missed a couple of days, so again I am playing catch-up!

Day 6

In your own space, pimp three comms or challenges and explain why you love them. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.

Day 7

In your own space, share something non-fannish about yourself. A passion or a hobby or a talent, something that people might not know about you. We are more than just our fandoms. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.Read more... )

Day 8

In your own space, talk about setting yourself a fannish goal. Big or small, it doesn't matter. Some examples: complete a bingo, sign up for a Big Bang, write that fic you've been thinking about for years, podfic that story that you love, make a fanmix for your fandom, post that bit of meta or reclist you keep putting off. Maybe resolve to be better at leaving feedback or answering comments. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your post if you feel comfortable doing so.Read more... )

This meme is a lot of fun!

Day 5

Stretch yourself a little and try something new. Go play in a new fandom or with a new pairing. Try working in a new medium. Or consume different fanworks. Give that new fandom a go. Listen to a podfic or watch some vids if you haven’t before. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it.

I'm completely unfamiliar with anime. I went to ff.net and picked a fandom at random, and read a nice little story. I did not know the background, but it made me want to look up "Escaflowne" and maybe check it out.

dreamflower: gandalf at bag end (Default)
Day 4

In your own space, create a list of at least three fannish things you'd love to receive, something you've wanted but were afraid to ask for - a fannish wish-list of sorts. Leave a comment in this post saying you did it. Include a link to your wish-list if you feel comfortable doing so. Maybe someone will grant a wish. Check out other people's posts. Maybe you will grant a wish. If any wishes are granted, we'd love it if you link them to this post.

Isn't that neat? I never had anyone translate my stories before!!! *grin* Hyperbole aside (because I know of a LOT of hobbit writers who are better than I am) it's really flattering!
