Day 1

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you have created. It can be your favorite fanworks that you've created, or fanworks you feel no one ever saw, or fanworks you say would define you as a creator.

Remember that we're using the term fanwork in the broadest sense of the word here - things like episode guides, meta, canon timelines, thematic lists, recs, fandom overviews, picspams, discussion posts, etc totally count.

2. My big AU Crossover, The Gate to Everywhere http://www.lotrgfic.com/viewstory.php?sid=1810

This is a crossover between AU LotR/Narnia, and I sat on it for a long time before finishing it up a couple of years ago for the GFIC Big Bang. Mostly because I'd like more feedback on it, and also because of Armariel's awesome artwork.

3. My website for The Hobbit fic, Off Into the Blue for Mad Adventure

http://offintotheblue.weebly.com/

This has links to as much TH fic posted prior to 2012 as I could possibly find. I still hope to add a few more if I can find them.

I hope to add another page of 2012 fic written pre-release, and then for post movie fic, but haven't had a chance yet.

Day 2

In your own space, post a rec for at least three fanworks that you did not create. Drop a link to your post in the comments. See if you can rec fanworks that are less likely to be praised: tiny fandoms, rare pairings, fanworks other than stories, lesser known kinks or tropes. Find fanworks that have few to no comments, or creators new to a particular fandom and maybe aren't well known or appreciated. Appreciate them.

Well, Grey Wonderer took one of my LotR fanfic recs (I'd like to second her rec of Elanor's "A Secret Gate"), so I decided to go with something different, and rec some non-Tolkien fic:

Day 3

Comment to someone you haven't ever interacted with before or introduce yourself to someone you've interacted with and friend/follow them. Afterwards, leave a comment in this post with the equivalent of "I did it!"

Some of you have been checking out other participant's recs and self-recs from the Day 1 and Day 2 posts. If you've interacted with anyone new, you can absolutely count that for Day 3!

Can anyone tell me why my first cut did not work? I thought I highlighted 1, 2 and 3, but it only cut 1.

LJ being uncooperative is more than a little annoying right now!

I need to make a post about the new stories for the Yule Exchange. Can't. Because of LJ.

I need to find an old post to link to. On LJ.

And all of my friends seem to be MIA. So here I am over at DW. Do you suppose I will be able to import, or would that be affected by the troubles over at LJ?

This snowflake meme looks interesting. I might take that up!

In non-LJ news, I am waiting for the cable guy. Intermittent tiling on the TV; intermittent outages on my internet; and now intermittent outages on our landline. He's supposed to be here before 5. But I need to go into Stillwater--

because (good news) I have a new part-time job: teaching knitting and crocheting at JoAnns! But I need to get over there before they close to pick up and sign some paperwork so I can teach classes this weekend!

Other good news: I am listening to the cast recording of LOTR: The Musical.

Here again

My favorite New Year's Song:

HAVE A VERY HAPPY 2013!!!

We have only four stories so far in the Moderation Queue awaiting the reveal on January 1.

While you have until midnight CST, December 31 (6AM GMT, Jan.1) to get your story in, if I don't see it by about 2PM on the 31, and I have not heard from you, I will begin to try and find out whether or not you will be following through and trying to find a pinch-hitter. I REALLY do not want to have any participant lacking a story this year. Please respond to this post if you are in any doubt whatsoever.

If you are not participating or if you are participating but finished with your story, but are interested in being an emergency last-minute pinch-hitter, please respond here as well.

While my plan is to unlock the stories first thing New Year's Day morning, I have to confess I've been having a little bit of trouble with my internet connectivity. If the stories don't show up until later in the day, that will be the reason.

Comments will be screened.

Due to the DH having to work this evening from 2-11PM we are having a quiet Christmas--we had our traditional breakfast (steak and waffles) and opened our gifts. Tomorrow our son, his girlfriend and her kids will be over for dinner and their presents. I may go see TH:AUJ again on my own this afternoon; depends on how bad the weather is.

I got some very nice gifts: Presentses... )

Ah well! I hope everyone else is having as nice a holiday as we are.

Well, I went to see TH:AUJ again. Once more, two cuts, for non-spoilery and spoilers:

And have lots to say, but it will have to wait for morning. I'm nearly as wound up as seeing it the first time, but the DH is more than ready for bed.

It still makes me happy!!!!

And I noticed lots of new things this time round...I'll post more tomorrow!

The page that came up with I tried to get on LJ said they were doing "emergency maintenance". Does anyone know just what the emergency is?

What's everyone been up to today?

I posted this over at [livejournal.com profile] hobbit_holidays.

It's been a long time since I wrote a story that was not either a WIP or an exchange story or a challenge story. But this one came to me tonight after the Children's Pageant at church, and I came home and just wrote it all up at once. And though it's been a very long time, I thought this was a good place for it.

Rating: G, but a little angsty
Summary: It's the Year of the Troubles, and the Year is Turning but the Troubles aren't over yet. Pippin's sister Pimpernel ponders what the New Year might bring. Will her brother ever come home?

The Darkest Night

This is adorable. It's called "The Hobbit Christmas Song (The Greatest Gift)" and it's very funny.

dreamflower: gandalf at bag end (Default)
I can hardly believe it. I was very late learning about it. We slept most of the day, and watched the news late (we always DVR the news and watch it later)--and so today we found out much later than everyone else did.

I can't help but thinking of all those poor babies being slaughtered for no reason, all those parents and grandparents and brothers and sisters who've been planning Christmas and buying presents and anticipating the joy, and now it has all turned to ashes.

Why? Why do some people have to try to spread their own misery to as many other people as possible in such a violent and horrific way? I can't begin to understand. I suppose I ought to feel as sorry for the shooter as I do for his victims, but I just can't.

And guns? Especially assault weapons. Yes, it's true that someone determined to be violent and commit murder will find a way. But at least the havoc would be reduced if they did not have such an easy way to harm so many people at once. Perhaps their evil would be confined to a smaller number--not that even one murder is acceptable, but still...

I don't know. I guess I'll never know. All I can do is pray.

First of all:

SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! ♥ ♥ ♥

I'm going to split this up into parts.
non-spoilery general observations )

The following are some rather detailed spoilers!

lots and lots of spoilery stuff )

I did get my hobbit-lass costume and my feet done in time to wear them, and the DH even wore his cloak and carried a staff! Our son went with us; no costume, though.

Here are some more pics of our decorations this year: Read more... )

In other news--Monday we got a nice surprise in the mail. A check for $85 from the electric co-op we belonged to in Mississippi! We did not expect to get one this year--but apparently they had more than 5 years worth of dividends to send us! (They hold the first few years, but we both thought it was 5 years, which would have made last year's check the last one--but apparently not! He says he thinks they may have held the first ten years; that would be cool, as it means we'd get them for another 4 years..)

Yesterday we went to Stillwater and did a little Christmas shopping. I picked up a few stocking stuffers, and the DH got one of my gifts--he needed me to pick it out, as it is a new desk chair! I'd been needing one badly, but it was not on my Christmas list, so I was quite surprised when we stopped at Staples and he made me go and sit in chairs, LOL!

I plan to finish my hobbit feet and my costume alterations today, and whip up a cloak for the DH. Tomorrow if I have time, I will make him a Gandalf hat.

Tomorrow night!!!!! *grin* I am so excited! Our son also decided to go with us, so we will pick him up on the way.
