Fic rec

I would love to rec a delightful fic I've been reading today. Voices at the Door by [livejournal.com profile] rhymer23. It's a beautiful series of vignettes about the friendship between Bilbo and Aragorn, how they met and how their friendship developed over the years that Bilbo dwelt in Rivendell.

The author is fairly new to writing LotR fanfic, but her story is filled with rich and vivid descriptions and the characterizations of both Bilbo and Aragorn are spot on. You can see why they are drawn together, the hobbit in exile from his own people and the lonely king in exile whose wanderings are given a new purpose when he can describe them to another kindred soul. It's not a long story--only 14 short chapters!

Please do read this story if you are at all fond of Aragorn and/or Bilbo, and let the author know if you enjoy it half as much as I have been!

My sister sent me this photo that appeared in USA Today. It's a picture taken at a football game, and shows her son-in-law with one of my little great-nieces! I've not had a chance to meet this little cutie in person yet, so it was fun to see the picture of her:

I have at last broken through my block on this story, and expect that it will move along more regularly now.

A few weeks ago I got a PM from a person who was publishing a scholarly work on Tolkien for permission to mention some of my stories in the essay. I gave permission, and had some nice e-mail correspondence with him.

The essay is now published as a Kindle e-book: Tolkien's Triumph: The Strange History of 'The Lord of the Rings' by John Lennard. It includes an entire section devoted to secondary works and fanfiction.

He has some very flattering things to say about my stories "A New Reckoning", "The Road to Edoras" and "In the Court of the High King". I am not the only fanfiction writer he mentions. He also includes [livejournal.com profile] pandemonium_213 (my co-author for "The Prisoner and the Hobbit") [livejournal.com profile] blslarner (analyzing "The King's Commission" and "Murder Most Foul") and [livejournal.com profile] jodancingtree (concerning her three stories "Following the Other Wizard", "The Queen's Orc", "The Grey at the End of the World").

The author has an LJ: [livejournal.com profile] bracketyjack and a blog, Reading Matters.

I think he did a wonderful job!

You Tube?

Is there some special something you need to watch/listen to YouTube now? Ever since I got my new computer, all the YouTube clips are muted. There's a little "x" by the sound symbol, and I can't figure out how to turn it off. Is there something I need to install or something?

The October Challenge stories are up!

Some of you might have spotted mine briefly the other evening, when I accidentally posted it here (I was working on the formatting and meant to post privately) so if you wondered where it vanished to, here it is!

Last night I was so sick.

TMI: (for grossness)Read more... )

Naturally I had to call in to work today. I'm going to force myself to eat something bland--maybe some plain toast and a glass of milk, otherwise I'll get a headache.  Then I may try to sleep a little more. Wish I felt up to writing or something...

Your influence...

Because of you, 0 people have taken this quiz.

Sharing the quiz with your friends creates a voter education chain reaction. Seriously. Try sharing it with your friends and see how fast your influence number increases. For every person you convince to take the quiz, we'll count the chain reaction of people they tell and add them to your influence number. Come back and watch it grow by the hour.

Apparently simply saying that I believe in intelligent design means I side with Republicans on "most science" issues, as my other answers were not in line with Republican views.

I heard about it on Good Morning America today. Apparently there is an annual fluff festival!

It's really about marshmallow fluff, but I think they truly ought to have a category for hobbit fluff. Hey, Peeps are made of marshmallow! Perhaps they could feature "Lord of the Peeps"!

Here are my winning entries in the MPTT 2013 Tree and Flower Awards! Thank you so much to all who nominated my work, and to all who voted for it; I am quite pleased with my results. I'm even more pleased that several of the stories of other people that I nominated (or wanted to nominate until someone else did) placed! And look at the lovely banners our hard-working banner-makers made! Read more... )

This is a reading of one of my fics, "Birthday Morning", originally posted on this date in 2006. It's Frodo's POV on the morning of a very special and solemn occasion.

Can anybody help me out?

I am trying my darndest to post the results of the Tree and Flower awards, but no matter what I do LJ tells me the post is too large! I know darn well I've posted longer things than this to LJ with no problem! I'm guessing it must be the formatting with all the links and such.

I have tried cutting it in half. I have tried cutting it in three. It still says it's "too large"! I'd really rather not spam people with six or seven posts when one or two would be better!

Stolen from several friends, but seen first at [livejournal.com profile] lindahoyland's journal:

Ask me a question about one of my stories. It can be absolutely anything (Including current WIP's) I will answer honestly.

You can also ask about my writing as a whole, if you like.

Dreams

I had the oddest dream just before I woke up this morning. It seems that they (whoever "they" are) discovered that there was a missing season of "Buffy the Vampire Slayer"; in it, Buffy is made the temporary mayor of Los Angeles. She and each of her Scoobies were given different "cool" cars which had been enchanted. Hers was a '64 Mustang (I know nothing of "cool cars" so I don't even know if the one in my dreams looked right or not). Somewhere along the line the Winchesters from "Supernatural" came into it. I don't remember much else--the dream was kind of like a "trailer" for the missing season...

Very odd, since it's been quite a while since I have seen either of those shows or even read any fic about them recently. I've no idea why it was on my mind enough to dream about.
